Role summary

We are seeking an experienced Design Engineer to support the development of our new generation of portable, handheld diagnostic medical devices. This is a hands-on role that offers a unique opportunity to be an integral part of an innovative company at an early stage. This will allow the successful candidate to be involved in many aspects of the business, significantly broadening their experience and allowing them to grow with the company.

Key responsibilities

  • Taking ownership of aspects of the mechanical design of the devices and implementing direction from the leadership team
  • Supporting designs through to mass production and solving problems along the way
  • Designing parts and assemblies using CAD and managing version control
  • Using prototyping and simulation to test design concepts
  • Analysing tolerance stacks and using GD&T
  • Optimising the design of parts and assemblies for manufacture
  • Designing test systems and production fixtures
  • Specifying and sourcing off-the-shelf components
  • Liaising with consultants, contractors and suppliers
  • Designing and conducting experiments and writing technical reports
  • Assembly and testing of devices
  • Risk management/carrying out FMEA activities with the wider team
  • Generation of design documentation including specifications, technical drawings, test and assembly procedures
  • Working alongside the engineering team, CTO and Design Director to realise product concepts

This is a hands-on role that offers a unique opportunity to be an integral part of an innovative medical start-up. This will allow any candidate to be involved in different areas across the business, therefore significantly broadening their experience and allowing them to grow with the company.

Essential skills and experience

  • 1st or 2:1 Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Design, Biomedical Engineering, Product Design or a similar field
  • Appreciation and desire to work across the full medical product lifecycle - from concept to design to manufacture to post-launch sustaining
  • An intermediate or advanced user of 3D CAD tools (preferably Onshape)
  • Experience generating 2D engineering drawings with a good understanding of GD&T
  • Experience of using rapid prototyping techniques to quickly test concepts
  • Understanding of design for various manufacturing techniques, including optimising parts for injection moulding, precision CNC machining and assembly processes
  • Appreciation of working within a quality and regulatory framework, preferably medical
  • Basic knowledge of working on design/process FMEA
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team to tight deadlines
  • Capable of being flexible and resilient in a fast-paced start-up environment

Desirable

  • Experience working responsibly with AI tools with effective engineering results
  • Experience of medical opto-mechanical design with the integration of electronics
  • Knowledge of process capability and optimising manufacturing processes
  • Experience of using modelling tools, such as MATLAB, Python and ANSYS
  • Experience of collaborating with industrial designers and creating cosmetic parts
  • Experience of designing fixtures, jigs, test and assembly processes
  • Experience of agile project management tools (preferably Jira)
  • A willingness to travel to customers and suppliers where necessary
  • Experience working in an early-stage start-up
