About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled FPGA Design Engineer to join Leonardo's Electronic Warfare (EW) and Future Combat Air (FCA) programmes. This pivotal role involves designing, developing, and verifying FPGA logic critical to the operation of advanced EW and combat air systems. The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge projects that support high-speed data movement, sensor interfacing, deterministic low-latency processing, and embedded processing using System-on-Chip (SoC) devices and soft-core processors. Based primarily in Luton, this role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to live programme delivery while engaging with Leonardo’s structured FPGA Academy, which provides tailored training to deepen your expertise. The position supports hybrid working arrangements, offering flexibility to meet project and personal needs, and provides a platform for professional growth through technical mastery and project delivery excellence.

  • HNC/HND or degree-level qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience working within a structured engineering development lifecycle.
  • Exposure to digital systems, programmable logic, or hardware development.
  • Knowledge of high-speed interfaces and digital design concepts such as Ethernet, PCIe, JESD, LVDS.
  • Hands-on experience supporting system-level debugging and testing using appropriate electronics tools.

Desirable skills include prior FPGA or HDL development experience, embedded processing, SoC-based designs, or experience within high-reliability industries such as defense or aerospace. Familiarity with real-time systems and a security clearance are advantageous but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

As an FPGA Design Engineer, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing, and verifying FPGA logic for electronic warfare and combat air systems.
  • Supporting modern FPGA platforms supporting high-speed data interfaces, deterministic processing, and embedded processing solutions.
  • Translating system-level requirements into robust FPGA architectures and implementations.
  • Implementing, simulating, and verifying FPGA designs using structured development methodologies.
  • Supporting integration, bring-up, and debugging of FPGA designs within complex hardware platforms in advanced electronics laboratories.
  • Collaborating closely with hardware, software, and systems teams to deliver fully integrated system solutions.
  • Participating in technical reviews, providing support across UK sites or customer locations as needed.

You will also have the opportunity to engage in continuous learning through Leonardo’s structured FPGA Academy, which offers targeted training modules aligned with your background and project needs.
