Design Engineer – Infrastructure
Location: York

Support the Continued Growth of Our Infrastructure Design Capability
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Design Engineer (Infrastructure) to join our expanding in-house Civil & Structural Design team based in York.
Following continued growth and the successful delivery of a number of major rail infrastructure frameworks and programmes, we are further strengthening our established York design team. This role will support the ongoing expansion of our Permanent Works Infrastructure Design capability, providing engineering expertise across a growing portfolio of rail projects throughout the UK.
Working within a multidisciplinary design environment, you will support the delivery of projects including Access for All (AfA) schemes, Electrification and Power (E&P) works, Project Reach programmes, lineside civils projects, station enhancement schemes, drainage improvements and associated railway infrastructure assets.
This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious engineer looking to further develop their technical expertise, gain exposure to major rail projects and progress towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status within a supportive and collaborative environment.
About The Business Unit
With a strong pipeline of secured framework agreements and infrastructure projects, our in-house Design & Engineering team continues to grow.
The York office is home to an established and successful Civil & Structural Design team that delivers multidisciplinary engineering solutions across enhancement projects, renewals, asset management frameworks and major infrastructure programmes throughout the rail sector.
As demand for infrastructure design services continues to increase, we are investing further in our York-based capability, expanding the team to support a growing portfolio of work across accessibility, infrastructure enhancement and asset renewal schemes nationwide.
Our engineers work closely with clients and delivery teams to provide practical, innovative and buildable solutions that improve safety, performance and sustainability across the railway network.
Typical projects include:
- Access for All (AfA) schemes
- Electrification and Power (E&P) enabling and support works
- Project Reach and route enhancement projects
- Lineside civils and associated railway infrastructure
- Station and property infrastructure upgrades
- Drainage and earthworks improvements
- Bridges, retaining structures and civil asset renewal schemes
- Multi-disciplinary rail infrastructure programmes
What We’re Looking For
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Working towards IEng or CEng accreditation with a recognised Professional Institution.
- Demonstrable experience in the design of civil engineering structures.
- Experience within the rail sector, with knowledge of bridges, stations, earthworks, drainage and associated infrastructure.
- Experience developing engineering solutions from feasibility through to detailed design.
- Ability to produce engineering calculations, technical reports, sketches and design deliverables to current standards and industry best practice.
- Understanding of CDM Regulations and Safe by Design principles.
- Familiarity with Designer's Risk Assessments and engineering assurance processes.
- Knowledge of relevant British Standards, Eurocodes and railway engineering standards.
- Experience using structural assessment and design software.
- Understanding of construction methodologies and buildability considerations.
- Strong organisational, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Commitment to delivering work safely, efficiently and to a high technical standard.

Desirable Requirements
- Experience working on Network Rail projects and framework contracts.
- Experience supporting Access for All (AfA) schemes, station enhancement projects, Electrification & Power (E&P) projects or lineside civils works.
- Experience undertaking site inspections and condition surveys.
- Understanding of the CRE (Design) process and engineering governance requirements.
- Experience working within BIM-led project environments.
- Sentinel PTS certification.
- Experience working alongside disciplines including E&P, Signalling, Telecoms, Permanent Way and OLE.
- Knowledge of asset management, infrastructure renewals and rail enhancement programmes.
