WE’RE HIRING – DESIGN ENGINEERS
Barrnon Ltd, Appleby, Cumbria
Barrnon designs and builds cutting-edge machinery and robotic systems for the nuclear industry. Our engineers work on exciting, often first-of-a-kind projects involving robotics, remote handling, specialist machinery, cutting and decontamination equipment.
We take projects from initial concept and CAD through manufacture, assembly, testing and deployment, giving our engineers the opportunity to see their designs become real machines.
Role 1: DESIGN ENGINEER
We’re looking for an experienced mechanical Design Engineer with strong 3D CAD/SolidWorks skills and a practical understanding of machine building.
You’ll design bespoke machinery, mechanical systems and robotic equipment, producing concepts, detailed models and manufacturing drawings while working closely with our fabrication, machining and assembly teams.

We’re looking for:
- Strong SolidWorks / 3D CAD skills
- Mechanical or machine design experience
- Knowledge of fabrication, machining and assembly
- Good engineering drawing and DFMA skills
- Practical problem-solving ability
- Ability to carry out calculations and FEA
- Engineering qualification or equivalent experience
- Experience in robotics, hydraulics, or regulated industries would be an advantage.
Role 2: JUNIOR DESIGN ENGINEER
Looking to start or develop your career in mechanical design?
We’re looking for an enthusiastic Junior/ Graduate Design Engineer who enjoys CAD, machinery design and making things.

Working alongside experienced engineers, you’ll help design real machinery and robotic systems, produce 3D models and drawings, and get involved in manufacture, assembly and testing.
We’re looking for:
- Engineering degree, HNC/HND, or similar
- Good 3D CAD skills
- Understanding of mechanical engineering and drawings
- Interest in machinery and manufacturing
- Practical, enthusiastic approach to engineering
- University, Formula Student, robotics, workshop or personal engineering projects are all relevant experience.
