DESIGN ENGINEER
๐ Hull / East Yorkshire

The Opportunity
An established niche manufacturing and engineering business in the Hull area is looking to strengthen its design capability and is interested in speaking with experienced Design Engineers.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong background in SolidWorks and manufacturing design who enjoys seeing their designs progress from initial concept through to manufacture and finished product.
The business produces specialist engineered equipment for customers across a range of sectors, with design, manufacturing and engineering working closely together from one site.
Salary is fully negotiable based on experience, and applications are welcomed from candidates at varying stages of their design career, providing they possess the core technical skills required.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed 3D models and engineering designs using SolidWorks
- Create accurate manufacturing and fabrication drawings
- Design sheet-metal and fabricated components and assemblies
- Develop designs from initial concept through to manufacture
- Produce and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Apply Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles
- Work closely with fabrication, production and engineering teams
- Develop customer-specific engineered solutions
- Review and modify existing designs
- Manage drawing revisions and technical documentation
- Support projects through the manufacturing process
- Consider materials, tolerances, manufacturing methods and practical assembly requirements
- Provide technical support to production when required
- Contribute ideas around product development and continuous improvement

Essential Experience
To be considered, you will need:
- Strong working knowledge of SolidWorks
- Experience producing 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings
- Understanding of sheet-metal design and/or fabricated assemblies
- Experience designing products or equipment for manufacture
- Ability to read and produce technical engineering drawings
- Understanding of manufacturing and fabrication processes
- Experience producing or working with Bills of Materials
- Good understanding of Design for Manufacture
- Strong practical problem-solving ability
- Ability to work collaboratively with manufacturing and engineering teams
Particularly Interesting Backgrounds
Experience within any of the following would be advantageous:
- Special-purpose machinery
- Food-processing equipment
- Stainless-steel fabrication
- Sheet metal
- Machinery manufacture
- Mechanical equipment
- Bespoke manufacturing
- Automated equipment
- Fabricated assemblies

What We're Looking For
We're particularly interested in people who are not solely CAD operators, but who understand how something will actually be manufactured once it leaves the drawing office.
You should be comfortable discussing your designs with production/fabrication teams, considering practical manufacturing methods and adapting designs where necessary.
Applications are welcomed from both established Design Engineers and developing engineers with strong SolidWorks/manufacturing foundations, with salary and level of responsibility discussed according to experience.
