Position Overview
The Design Engineer is responsible for the technical design, coordination, and engineering delivery of systems specifically related to underfloor heating (UFH) projects. This role focuses on engineering excellence within UFH system design, heating layouts, manifold and control configurations, heat source integration (such as heat pumps and district heating), and overall thermal performance.
The Design Engineer will support UFH projects from early-stage technical assessment through to detailed system design, installation coordination, and commissioning support. Working closely with internal teams, clients, suppliers, and contractors, the role ensures that UFH systems are designed, specified, and delivered to the required standards of performance, safety, quality, and sustainability.
Key Areas of Responsibility
- System design and specification
- Technical evaluation and engineering feasibility
- M&E coordination and integration with architectural and structural disciplines
- Reviewing drawings, layouts, and technical submissions
- Supporting procurement with technical input
- Site technical support during installation and commissioning
- Compliance with industry standards and regulations
- Client and stakeholder technical communication
Key Tasks
- Collaborate with clients and project stakeholders to understand project goals, objectives, and requirements.
- Evaluate the feasibility and viability of potential construction projects.
- Develop pre-construction project plans and strategies.
- Analyse project specifications, drawings, and contracts to identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Identify potential risks and challenges associated with the project and develop risk mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure that risk management plans are in place.
- Conduct value engineering studies to optimize project design and cost-effectiveness.
- Recommend alternative materials or construction methods to improve project efficiency.
- Maintain regular communication with clients to provide project updates, address concerns, and manage expectations.
- Present cost estimates, budgets, and schedules to clients for approval.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders to align project objectives.
- Foster strong working relationships with external partners and subcontractors
- Produce and/or review technical designs, schematics & calculations
- Ensure design compliance with relevant standards (Building Regs, British Standards etc.)
- Prepare tech subs, QITP paperwork, O&M manuals and any other related documentation.
- Assist procurement teams with technical evaluation of equipment, plant, and subcontractor proposals
- Support commissioning activities, system testing, and handover documentation.
- Resolve technical issues arising during construction.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field (preferred)
- You must have a driving license and access to your own vehicle.
Experience
- Ideally a Technical or Design background within M & E or Construction
- Prior Main Contractor experience or able to show a good understanding of the construction process.
- Preferably you will have knowledge of pre-construction processes, however applications from delivery focused candidates will be considered.
- Experience of Building Services, M&E system design, project management and renewable energy technology. Involving CHP/ Heat Pumps/ Communal Heating Systems/ District Heating Systems and Commercial Plant Rooms

Travel Requirements
The position will be based in Washington, with the opportunity for flexible and hybrid work models. Travel will be required on a regular basis to other operating locations/sites as specified by the Company.
