Design Engineer – OHL
Job Title: Design Engineer – OHL
Reporting To: Head of Design
Business Unit: Omexom Design
Location: United Kingdom
Purpose of the Position
To provide technical leadership and design expertise for Overhead Transmission Line (OHL) projects, utilising specialist knowledge of PLS-CADD and PLS-TOWER software. This role combines in-depth engineering expertise with strategic oversight to ensure successful project delivery. The Design Engineer will be responsible for delivering design projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Engage in the following core activities, including but not limited to:

Undertake design activities on assigned OHL projects, ensuring solutions are:
- Safe
- Robust
- Compliant
- Cost-effective

Manage the design process for assigned projects by:
- Maintaining regular engagement to ensure effective delivery
- Managing project controls, including:
- Change register
- Early Warning (EW) register
- Compensation Events (CEs)
- Project Management Instructions (PMIs) (Specific to some schemes, collaborate with an appointed Design Manager)

Provide weekly inputs to planners and take ownership of the agreed programme.

Oversee OHL design packages, ensuring technical excellence across:
- Concept
- Feasibility
- Detailed design phases

Provide technical support to other teams (Substations and Underground Cables) as requested.

Ensure all design deliverables meet:
- Industry standards
- Regulatory requirements
- Company best practices

Undertake detailed analyses using:
- PLS-TOWER
- PLS-CADD

Conduct technical reviews of subcontractor deliverables related to OHL design.

Supervise all relevant OHL design deliverables within a reasonable period from joining (training provided by Senior Design Engineers and Head of Design).

Participate in:
- Peer reviews
- Quality checks
- Design audits to maintain high standards

Provide input for:
- HAZID (Hazard Identification)
- HACON (Hazard and Operability) meetings

Support the development of junior engineers through:
- Guidance
- Feedback
- Training in best-practice design techniques

Promote:
- New technologies
- Design methods
- Continuous improvement within OHL design discipline

Maintain industry knowledge by participating in professional forums (e.g., IET, CIGRÉ, IEEE).

Actively promote Omexom to:
- Enhance business growth
- Attract aligned talent to expand the team

Conduct occasional travel within the UK (~one trip every eight weeks).
Governance and Stakeholder Interfaces
The Design Engineer will maintain strong relationships and typically interface with:
- Heads of Design (OHL, Underground Cables, and Substations)
- Design Managers
- Senior Design Engineers
- Client representatives
- Supplier representatives
- Operations Engineers and Site teams
- Technical Managers
- Internal Design Teams

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Essential Qualifications and Experience
- A degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering, or a related discipline (a Master’s Degree – MSc/MEng – is advantageous)

2+ years of OHL Design experience
-
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively progressing toward chartership with relevant experience

Demonstrable experience with OHL design elements

Proficiency in:
- PLS-CADD
- PLS-TOWER (Knowledge of AutoCAD and MS Project would be beneficial)

Cutting-edge design calculus skills, including:
- Complex engineering calculations
- Simulations
- System assessments

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to:
- Explain complex technical concepts clearly and confidently

Membership of professional institutions (e.g., IET, CIGRÉ, IEEE) is a plus.
Desirable Criteria

Experience in multidisciplinary project environments within:
- Energy transmission
- Infrastructure sectors

Experience in projects for:
- National Grid (NG)
- Scottish and Southern Energy Networks (SSEN)

In-depth knowledge of relevant:
- UK standards
- Regulatory frameworks

Ability to:
- Challenge existing practices
