Design Manager

We are currently seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead the delivery of multidisciplinary engineering design across major UK water infrastructure projects.

This is a senior role responsible for coordinating engineering teams, managing technical delivery and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with client requirements, industry standards, programme and budget.

You will oversee design activities across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept through to detailed design and construction support, while providing technical leadership and driving quality and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering design teams across complex water infrastructure projects.
  • Manage engineering design packages, ensuring delivery to programme, budget and required quality standards.
  • Oversee the production and review of:
    • Design reports
    • Engineering calculations
    • Technical drawings
    • Specifications
    • Scopes of work
  • Provide technical leadership throughout feasibility, concept, detailed design and construction support stages.
  • Coordinate Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, ICA, Structural and Geotechnical engineering disciplines.
  • Work closely with Project Managers on programme delivery, budgets and resource management.
  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, quality assurance and technical governance activities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors and project stakeholders.
  • Identify and manage design risks, changes and technical issues.
  • Mentor and support junior and developing engineers.
  • Contribute to technical proposals, bids and tender submissions.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, industry standards, client specifications and company procedures.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience as a Design Manager or similar senior engineering/design management role.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering design teams within a consultancy or engineering environment.
  • Proven experience delivering complex water infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Design management
    • Programme and resource management
    • Risk assessment
    • Change management
    • Quality assurance
    • Commercial management
  • Experience coordinating MEICA, Structural and Geotechnical engineering disciplines.
  • Good knowledge of CDM Regulations, Eurocodes, NEC contracts and UK water industry standards.
  • Experience managing engineering programmes, budgets and project deliverables.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership across multiple projects and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
  • Previous engineering consultancy experience.
  • Experience leading large-scale multidisciplinary infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of water utility standards and engineering best practice.
  • Experience supporting bids, tenders and business development activities.

About You

We’re looking for a confident and experienced Design Manager who can lead multidisciplinary teams while maintaining a strong focus on technical quality, programme and client delivery. You’ll be comfortable managing competing priorities, engaging with senior stakeholders and providing clear technical direction across complex engineering projects. Strong organisational, commercial and problem-solving skills are essential, together with a collaborative approach to leadership and project delivery.

This is a hybrid contract opportunity, with a minimum of three days per week in the office or on client sites. The role can be based from Epsom, London, Peterborough or Cambridge, with flexibility to travel to project locations as required.
