Job Overview
This role is responsible for leading the design management of design and build projects from initial concept through to completion across all RIBA Stages 0-7. The successful candidate will oversee the entire design process, from project inception and installation through to testing, commissioning, system integration, demonstration, handover, sign-off, and client training. They will ensure all statutory obligations are fully met, minimising risk to the business while maintaining compliance with relevant standards, policies, and procedures. The role also involves ensuring records, data, and systems are accurately maintained and kept up to date, building and sustaining strong client relationships, and collaborating with stakeholders to identify and develop opportunities that align with the wider business strategy.
Main Duties
Pre-Construction Phase
- Be responsible for the technical accuracy and compliance of projects and contracts.
- Engagement with stakeholders and clients to ascertain and prepare the project brief, including:
- Be responsible for the full design management of design and build projects from inception of a scheme through to completion (RIBA Stages 0 – 7), including:
- Drive design with continual input to optimise design and minimize unnecessary work.
- Developing Design Delivery Schedules and documentation including design management plans, design execution plans, and BIM (Building Information Modelling) execution plans.
- Develop comprehensive scope-of-work and contract document deliverables for each discipline.
- Negotiate scope-of-work, deliverables, and price with consulting firms, commissioning managers, suppliers, and sub-contractors.
- Compile, monitor, and manage design programmes.
- Support QS team in management of the tender process / preparing cost analysis/budgets.
- Lead Value engineering and opportunity reviews.
- Lead design risk identification, mitigation, and management.
- Continual technical support during the construction process including FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and SATs (Site Acceptance Tests).
- Continual technical support during testing, commissioning, integrated system testing (IST) and handover procedures.
- Undertake design review and have responsibility for the overall project governance.
- Reviewing project delivery and produce monthly reports highlighting any areas of technical risk or non-compliance and the associated mitigation measures.
- In conjunction with the construction team undertake buildability reviews and input into design.

- Conduct in conjunction with design team quality control inspections on project sites during construction phase.
- Conduct in conjunction with design team quality control inspections on project sites during pre-commissioning and commissioning stages.
- Continual technical support during the construction process including FATs and SATs.
- Continual technical support during testing, commissioning, integrated system testing (IST) and handover procedures.
- Manage, co-ordinate, and lead the design team's input and close out of:
- Site technical queries and request for information (RFI's).
- Construction drawing reviews.
- Technical submittal reviews.
- Commissioning plans and commissioning scripts.
- O&M manuals including design criteria statements.
- Input into O&M documentation from outset of project through to practical completion, including liaison with office O&M team to ensure documents are issued as per requirements in a timely and presentable manner.
What we are looking for
- Relevant degree level qualification in an Engineering Qualification (Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Building Services).
- Proven background in design management.
- Project experience in live critical working environments. (Data centres, pharmaceutical, laboratories, heavy industrial, etc.)
- CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card holder relevant to role.
- IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) or SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) site management safety training scheme course.
- Full UK Driving licence holder.
- Willingness to travel or stay away on short term basis dependent on needs of project.
- Client facing and client management experience.
