Design Manager
The Opportunity
We’re working with an established engineering business looking to appoint a technically strong Design Manager to support the design and delivery of mechanical and building services requirements across its projects.
This role could suit an experienced Design Manager, but it’s also a great opportunity for a Mechanical or Building Services Engineer who is ready to take the next step in their career and grow into a broader design management position.
You’ll be involved in the design process from initial concept and specification through to delivery and installation, working closely with clients, contractors, suppliers, and internal teams. Alongside your technical responsibilities, you’ll help coordinate design activities, support commercial decisions, and identify practical, cost-effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate design activities from initial concept and specification through to project delivery and installation.
- Review, coordinate, and develop designs for building services and associated equipment.
- Provide technical input across mechanical and building services disciplines, including plumbing, heating, HVAC, associated controls, and equipment.
- Liaise with clients, consultants, contractors, suppliers, and internal teams to resolve technical and design-related matters.
- Ensure designs meet project requirements, relevant regulations, specifications, and quality standards.
- Identify practical, technically sound, and commercially viable design solutions.
- Review drawings, specifications, technical submissions, and project documentation.
- Support procurement and project teams with technical information and equipment selection.
- Assist with estimating and costing, including reviewing materials, equipment, and project requirements.
- Identify opportunities for value engineering and cost-effective design improvements.
- Coordinate design changes and keep relevant stakeholders informed.
- Support projects through installation, commissioning, and handover where required.

About You
You’ll have a strong technical background in mechanical engineering or building services, along with the communication and organisational skills needed to coordinate design work and collaborate with a range of stakeholders.
You may already be working as a Design Manager, or you could be a Mechanical Design Engineer or Building Services Engineer looking for an opportunity to broaden your responsibilities and develop into a management role.

You’ll ideally have:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong technical knowledge of mechanical and building services systems.
- Relevant commercial experience in mechanical engineering, building services, construction, or a related environment.
- Practical knowledge of systems such as plumbing, heating, HVAC/air conditioning, and associated equipment.
- The ability to interpret and review technical drawings and specifications.
- Good organisational and project coordination skills.
- Commercial awareness and an understanding of project costs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A practical, solutions-focused approach and the ability to manage competing priorities.
