### **About the Role**

We are looking for an **experienced Design Manager** to join SYSTRA’s growing civil engineering team. Ideal candidates demonstrate strong leadership, commercial awareness, and exceptional interpersonal skills—alongside a passion for scaling a high-performance team in a dynamic engineering environment.

Reporting to the **Engineering Manager**, you will oversee **design delivery for specified civil engineering work packages**, ensuring:

- Aligned **project plans** with programme and cost controls
- **Resource allocation**, programme monitoring, and fee/scope adjustment management
- On-time, on-budget project completion meeting client specifications
- Seamless **design/construction collaboration** and **third-party engagement** to enhance SYSTRA’s reputation
- Clear alignment with **project requirements** while upholding cost efficiency and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

As Design Manager, you will collaborate with designers and partners to:

Project Coordination

  • Develop and enforce systems to ensure quality, safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance (e.g., CDM legislation)
  • Track progress, allocate resources, and liaise with other Design Managers for portfolio-wide balance
  • Apply project controls, risk assessments (HAZOP), and environmental policies to mitigate project challenges

Client and Team Leadership

  • Engage with clients, BIM Managers, and contractors to deliver timely, value-driven solutions; align projects with NEC3 contracts
  • Coordinate internal BIM, construction, and procurement teams from preliminary to detailed design stages
  • Liaise with stakeholders and UK/overseas multidisciplinary teams to clarify expectations

Operational Support

  • Co-author project agreements, tender documents, and contracts with Engineering Managers
  • Oversee programme, budget, and resource reporting during milestone meetings and monthly updates
  • Supervise diverse teams (APMs, graduates, and apprentices) and remain compliant with HSE audits and ISO standards

Technical Expertise

  • Degree in civil/structural engineering or related field
  • Expertise in design coordination for infrastructure projects (e.g., BIM, NEC3 contracts)
  • Experience with ProjectWise and Bentley Systems implementation
  • Practical knowledge of CDM Regulations and Health & Safety compliance

Leadership & Communication

  • Exceptional commercial judgement, negotiation skills, and ability to drive design efficiency
  • Strong project management ethos—resource optimisation, risk planning, and innovation-focused solutions
  • Full professional membership with institutions such as ICE, CIOB or similar
