The opportunity

Blackman & White is looking for an experienced Design Manager / Senior Design Engineer to lead and deliver the design of our CNC cutting machinery. This is a senior, hands-on role combining engineering design, project management and team leadership. You will take projects from initial concept through design, manufacture, testing and production release, while leading and developing the Design Team.

Blackman & White is an established UK manufacturer of CNC cutting systems, designing and manufacturing innovative machinery from our facility in Heybridge, Essex.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor and develop the internal Design Team.
  • Manage multiple engineering projects from concept to production release.
  • Remain hands-on with detailed mechanical and engineering design.
  • Produce and review 3D models, assemblies and production drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Ensure designs are robust, cost-effective and optimised for manufacture.
  • Manage prototyping, testing and engineering changes.
  • Coordinate external design consultancies and subcontract engineers.
  • Work closely with Production, Procurement, suppliers and customers.
  • Ensure projects meet agreed technical, cost, quality and delivery targets.
  • Drive continuous improvement in products and manufacturing processes.

About you

You will have substantial senior-level experience in engineering design and manufacturing, with a proven ability to deliver production-ready designs.

You will also bring:

  • Strong SolidWorks capability.
  • Experience managing engineering projects from concept through manufacture and testing.
  • Knowledge of multiple manufacturing and tooling techniques.
  • Experience across mechanical and electrical engineering.
  • Good understanding of production, procurement and supply chain.
  • Strong commercial awareness around design cost and manufacturability.
  • Experience leading and mentoring engineers.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
