We are looking for a motivated and ambitious Design Manager to join our Rail team, supporting the delivery of a diverse range of infrastructure projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional who is keen to further develop their skills and take on increasing levels of responsibility within a supportive and experienced project environment.
Working on multidisciplinary rail projects from design development through to handover, you will be responsible for managing the delivery of design solutions that meet programme, cost, quality and technical requirements. You will play a key role in coordinating multiple design disciplines, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements while working closely with project teams and stakeholders to support successful project outcomes.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the delivery of complex infrastructure schemes, gaining exposure to all stages of the design lifecycle within a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Role Responsibilities
- Manage the delivery of design activities throughout the project lifecycle, from Approval in Principle (AIP) and detailed design through to construction support and handover.
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams to achieve project objectives and deliver integrated design solutions.
- Monitor and manage design programmes, budgets, quality requirements and project deliverables.
- Ensure designs are delivered in accordance with relevant rail industry standards, client requirements and company procedures.
- Manage design scope, technical requirements and design change throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate interfaces between engineering disciplines, project teams, clients and other stakeholders.
- Support project planning, reporting, governance activities and design reviews.
- Identify project risks and opportunities, implementing appropriate mitigation measures where required.
- Drive continuous improvement and promote best practice across design delivery activities.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, delivery partners and internal stakeholders.

Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience managing the delivery of designs on multidisciplinary rail infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of the design process from concept development through to detailed design and construction support.
- Experience coordinating multiple engineering disciplines and managing design interfaces.
- Knowledge of Network Rail standards, approvals processes and project delivery requirements.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver work to programme and budget requirements.
- Commercial awareness and understanding of project controls, risk management and quality assurance processes.
Desirable
- Professional membership of a relevant engineering institution or working towards chartership.
- Experience using ProjectWise, Bentley Systems or similar design management platforms.
- Experience delivering projects within a collaborative framework or programme environment.
- Project management qualifications or relevant management training.
- Experience supporting design delivery from early development stages through to project handover.
