Design / Project Engineer

Location: Near Keighley, West Yorkshire
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Department: Design / Projects
Salary: Competitive and dependent on experience
Travel Required: Yes - UK-wide, including occasional overnight stays as required

H.A. McEwen (Boiler Repairs) Ltd is seeking a motivated and versatile Design / Project Engineer to join our established, family-run industrial engineering business. The role will provide design and technical support to the estimating, operations and project teams across a varied portfolio of mechanical engineering, steam, heating and process plant projects.

The successful candidate will produce high-quality 2D and 3D designs, technical drawings, layouts and project documentation. Support may be required at any stage of a project, from marketing and initial enquiry through estimating, detailed design, installation and final handover.

This is a fast-paced position requiring the ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time, while maintaining accuracy, clear communication and a practical approach to engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate 2D and 3D engineering drawings and models using appropriate CAD software.
  • Develop mechanical plant layouts, process pipework arrangements, fabrication drawings and installation details.
  • Assist the estimating team with design concepts, technical proposals, material take-offs and tender documentation.
  • Provide technical and design support to the operations and project teams throughout project delivery.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, technical submissions, project documentation and handover information.
  • Create technical content and supporting visuals for marketing materials, case studies, presentations and business development activities.
  • Attend client sites to undertake surveys, take measurements and collect the information required for design development.
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and colleagues to clarify technical requirements and coordinate design information.
  • Support the preparation of risk assessments, method statements, operating manuals and other technical documentation where required.
  • Maintain accurate drawing registers, revision control and project design records.
  • Identify practical, safe and cost-effective engineering solutions while supporting continuous improvement across the business.

Essential Requirements

  • HNC, HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent relevant engineering qualification or level of experience.
  • Experience producing 2D and 3D designs within a mechanical engineering, process plant or similar environment.
  • Competence using CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit, Plant 3D or a comparable package.
  • A practical understanding of mechanical engineering principles and process pipework systems. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and P&IDs.
  • Strong written, verbal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects, tasks and deadlines.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel to sites throughout the UK, with occasional overnight stays when required.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience of steam systems, boiler houses, industrial process plant, heating systems or utility infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of pipework fabrication, pressure systems, plant installation and associated engineering standards.
  • Experience producing client-facing technical proposals and project documentation.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and CDM requirements.
  • Previous experience supporting estimating, project management or site delivery teams.
