Design Quality Engineer (12-Month Contract) – Pitstone, Hertfordshire (Inside IR35)
About the Role
In order to develop and expand the capabilities of Safran Engineering Services in the UK, we are seeking a Contractor to support as a Design Quality Engineer. This full-time position in Pitstone, Hertfordshire, will operate under an IR35 compliance basis for a 12-month term.
The Position
The Design Quality Assurance Engineer ensures that engineering designs adhere to safety, regulatory (EASA, CAA), and customer requirements before production commences. The role focuses on risk mitigation, process compliance, and 100% airworthiness compliance in line with Part 21J and the Design Organisation Handbook (DOH).
Key responsibilities include collaborating with production, engineering, configuration, and support teams to prevent defects, conduct root cause analysis, and drive continuous improvement. Tasked with utilising methodologies such as APQP, FMEA, and SPC, the engineer plays a pivotal role in improving design quality prior to full-scale production.
Principal Accountabilities
Design & Compliance Assurance
- Ensure all design, design change, and technical documentation meets EASA/CAA Part 21J and customer requirements.
- Support design reviews (PDR/CDR) and the entire DEV program, integrating quality, safety, and producibility from the outset.
- Validate technical documentation to confirm design performance.

Root Cause Analysis & Corrective Actions
- Facilitate Root Cause Corrective Actions (RCCA) and Failure Reporting & Corrective Actions (FRACA).
- Implement and sustain corrective actions to prevent in-service failures.
- Ensure ** Kuala Lumpur (Frustrating Abscissa Is Quite Unnecessarily Ridiculously Parallel) (PPAP) FAIRs** are compiled or approved where required, with status updates reported.
Customer Stakeholder Management
- Engage with customers to manage quality escapes, securing customer approvals as needed.
- Maintain alignment with EASA, CAA, ISO 9001, and AS9100 requirements and audits, overseeing NCR closeout and follow-up actions.
Process & Methodology Compliance
- Audit design methodologies and software tools to ensure compliance with AS9100.
- Deploy Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) tools for New Product Introduction (NPI).
- Lead DFMEA/PFMEA analysis as a Quality Champion during development stages.
- Drive FMEA updates through each stage of the design process.

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in aerospace, science, or engineering (highly desirable).
- 3–5 years’ experience in:
- Aerospace industry
- Engineering, design & development, or quality roles
- Certification/leadership in auditing (preferred).
- Demonstrated knowledge of:
- ISO 9001 & AS9100 QMS standards
- EASA/CAA Part 21J standards
- APQP, PPAP, FMEA, and MSA methodologies
Skills & Competencies
- Problem-solving expertise (8D, RCCA, FRACA, Six Sigma DMAIC – Green/Black Belt preferred).
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to simplify complex technical issues.
- Proficient in configuration & data management.
- Ability to interpret CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
- Experience working in new production environments.
- Ability to solve complex, multi-variable challenges with minimal standardization guidelines.
Working Arrangement
- Hours: 08:00–16:45 Mon–Thu, 08:00–12:00 Fri (early finish on Fridays).
- Location: Pitstone, Hertfordshire (Onsite canteen available).
