The Role

Are you a Design Engineer or Graduate Designer looking for a new product design and development role? Are you confident in 2D and 3D design work through ArtiosCAD or similar CAD systems? Are you able to take a client's brief through design and sample phases into successful production?

Smurfit Westrock Weston-super-Mare has an exciting vacancy for a full-time designer to work in the New Product Development Team, offering optimized solutions in the corrugated packaging sector supplying into a variety of markets.

This role is primarily focused in structural design for manufacture, providing concepts and CAD designs for the full range of packaging solutions. You will be able to demonstrate skills in designing on CAD to develop briefs, understand manufacturing processes and have a practical approach to manufacturing, underpinning your creative skills.

The main responsibilities of this role include:

  • Working closely with customers, internal teams and external suppliers to produce practical solutions to meet customer demands while considering manufacturing process boundaries
  • To ensure enquiries and samples are handled professionally and timely from brief of concept through to project delivery
  • To provide a cohesive channel of communication between the Sales & Operational team members
  • To ensure that all information issued to the factory is correct to the Customers’ requirements
  • Produce accurate CAD designs and drawings of packaging solutions for use by our Customers and Operations
  • Produce samples for Customer evaluation and approval
  • Effectively operate the selected design system as well as our business software
  • Generate conceptual artwork ideas, through to 3D visuals and mocked up samples

The successful candidate will have:

  • Ideally, to have a minimum of 2 years’ relevant experience within the Packaging Industry.
  • Excellent working knowledge of CAD (ideally Artios or Kasemake), Adobe Suite, Excel, and other Microsoft packages
  • Experience and interest in graphic/print design would be an advantage
  • An understanding of factory manufacturing capabilities and systems
  • Project Management
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative way
  • Evidence of demonstrating a proactive ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Self-motivation, enjoying a high-paced environment with an ability to co-ordinate multiple projects
  • Understanding of full product lifecycle from initial concept and design through to production
  • Ability to challenge new and existing designs and solutions for the benefit of Smurfit Westrock and the customer
  • Excellent time management and personal organisation skills with a flexible approach
  • Proven track record in taking ownership and for consistently delivering results.
