Designer Hourly – Building Materials Layout & Sales

A Brief Overview of the Role

The Designer Hourly uses technical, design, and computer tools to create detailed presentation layouts for residential roof and floor systems. This position is critical for pricing, manufacturing, and construction phases, bridging gaps between architects, engineers, contractors, and customers. Responsibilities span design accuracy, customer service, and site collaboration.


Responsibilities

Design & Technical Work

  • Develops residential roof and floor system layouts for pricing and manufacturing purposes.
  • Designs custom layouts for truss structures, bathrooms, kitchens, decks, patios, and other customer-assigned projects.
  • Precisely reads and interprets blueprints and technical drawings to ensure accuracy in material takeoffs.
  • Maintains compliance with local building codes and material specifications during project development.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Discusses design changes and corrections with engineers, architects, contractors, and customers prior to/and during construction.
  • Resolves architectural and design discrepancies with clear documentation and follow-up.
  • Conducts on-site inspections and measures/sales projects as required.

Sales & Customer Service

  • Presents, sells, and follows up on new jobs, sales materials, and customer proposals.
  • Assists customers with questions, providing accurate, timely, and thorough service.
  • Assists the shipping team as needed during production and dispatch.

Operational Tasks

  • Uses AUTOCAD and proprietary software to generate detailed material lists and final contractor-ready layouts.
  • Supports invoice generation, scheduling, and delivery logistics for projects.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, demonstrating adaptability and work ethic.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School diploma or GED (minimum requirement).
  • Preference for an Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Civil engineering
    • Architectural design
    • Construction-related fields (may be substituted by experience).

Experience

  • 1+ years of drafting/technical drawing experience in:
    • Design
    • Building materials or construction distribution industry
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical documentation.

Technical & Communication Skills

  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Office Suite (essential).
  • Proficient in AUTOCAD (industry-standard CAD tool).
  • Advanced technical writing skills for detailed project documentation.
  • Strong salesmanship and client communication abilities.
  • Ease of adapting to propriety in-house software.
