- Graduate Diploma: Alongside your policing career, you’ll work towards a Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing, recognised internationally.
- Blended Learning: A combination of in-house training, university-led learning, and practical frontline experience. Training is delivered in WMP classrooms and virtually.
- Structured Pathway:
- Year 1: Train as a uniformed Police Constable, working with Response and Neighbourhood teams, wearing uniform, and responding to emergency calls on a 24/7 shift pattern.
- Year 2: Specialise in the Detective pathway, training with units such as the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and Investigations teams to build the expertise needed for detective work.
- Future Opportunities: Once fully qualified, you can apply for promotion or specialise in areas such as Counter Terrorism, Serious & Organised Crime, Fraud, or County Lines.
You could find yourself working in departments including the Public Protection Unit (PPU), FCID, Homicide, or the Regional Organised Crime Unit (ROCU) – no two cases or days are the same.
It is important to note that alongside your role as a Police Officer, you will study toward a Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing Practice. If you are not interested in completing a further educational qualification, please explore our PCEP or DCEP routes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
