Are you a Java developer who thrives on solving complex problems and building great software?

At Heywood, we're building the future of pension technology, and we need your skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm to help us lead the way.

About You

  • Strong Java developer able to deliver quality code as part of a team
  • Keen to work in an Agile environment
  • Eager to participate in your team and collaborate with Senior and Principal Developers
  • Comfortable working in an existing codebase, but know when to ask for help from your team

The Role

As a member of one of our Scrum teams, you will build and deploy new products and features that meet the needs of our expanding customer base. Heywood is a company that’s just right for the next stage in your career. Why? As a long-established and successful business, we can provide stability, support, and growth opportunities, all while being the right size for you to make an impact and be recognized and valued for your contributions. You’ll have the opportunity to work on meaningful projects and see the impact of your work in a dynamic and encouraging environment.

We are located in Altrincham, in a workspace that promotes collaboration and facilitates hybrid working with great tech, AV equipment, and flexible spaces.

First and foremost, you will be a strong Java developer, but we’re not just looking for great coders. We’re looking for problem solvers who are keen to share their ideas and help improve the way we work. As a proactive and inquisitive developer, you'll be passionate about collaborating with and contributing to the professional growth of your team. You'll also be comfortable working with other specialists such as UX Designers, product experts, Test Analysts, and, of course, our customers.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

You'll be working on a modern JDK (we currently use Amazon Corretto 17) and with a variety of approaches such as pair programming, automated testing, and continuous integration - all backed by DevOps technologies such as Chef, Vagrant, Kubernetes, Terraform, Packer, and Docker (though we don’t expect you to know all these). Our culture encourages continuous improvement, so you’ll have the opportunity to help investigate new tech, frameworks, and processes.

Our Assessment Process

Your application will be reviewed by our Principal Developers. If selected, you’ll be invited to an interview, where you will:

  • Work on a Java coding task with one of our Developers.
  • Have a chat with two of our Principal Developers to learn more about you and for you to learn about us.

We aim to complete the entire process, from application to job offer, within two weeks. Apply now and let's build something amazing together!
