Development Engineering Manager

Location – Flexible on Depot/Office

We are a leading temporary works specialist and at the forefront of our industry for over 60 years, with a reputation built on engineering and service excellence. This enables us to deliver the right temporary works solution for our customers, whatever the scale or complexity of the project. Our customers include civil engineering and construction contractors, asset owners, and consulting engineering firms through to small builders.

We are currently looking for someone to lead and manage the Development Engineering Team, taking accountability to the Engineering Director for the development, support, technical governance, and continuous improvement of Mabey Hire’s product range, ensuring products are safe, compliant, commercially effective, scalable, and aligned to the strategic growth of the business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Owning the product development roadmap, from concept through to delivery
  • Leading and developing the Development Engineering Team (direct and indirect reports)
  • Driving innovation and continuous improvement across the product range
  • Providing technical oversight, including checking approaches and ensuring engineering consistency
  • Ensuring all products are supported by high-quality, accurate technical documentation
  • Managing product investigations, driving root cause analysis, and improvements
  • Embedding commercial thinking into all product decisions (cost, utilisation, scalability)
  • Working cross-functionally to align engineering with customer and business needs
  • Representing Mabey Hire externally with clients and industry bodies where required

What You Need

  • Strong Technical Judgement and Broad product understanding
  • Experience of the Temporary Works industry
  • Proven ability to lead teams and deliver complex workstreams
  • A commercial mindset, understanding how engineering drives business value
  • Confidence operating at both strategic and operational levels
  • The ability to influence and collaborate across the organisation
  • A proactive, accountable approach – you take ownership and solve problems
  • Experience in temporary works or construction products is highly desirable, particularly within the UK market, with international exposure a plus.
