Development Underwriter Scotland — Home Based
Up to £80,000 + Bonus + Benefits
The Role
We are recruiting a Development Underwriter to join an established commercial P&C underwriting team, focused on generating and writing new business across an existing panel of broking partners in Scotland.
This is a home-based, market-facing role with a clear new business remit. The regional book and existing broker relationships are already in place, supported by a dedicated service underwriting function — this role is not about managing that book day to day, but about actively growing it through new business production and broker development.
You will work within a defined commercial P&C product suite, with delegated underwriting authority to trade SME and mid-market risks. As the business continues its regional growth strategy, you will also be involved in the development of new agency relationships, helping to expand the broking panel alongside your new business underwriting activity.
What You'll Be Doing
- Generating and underwriting new commercial P&C business across an established panel of broking partners in Scotland
- Building strong working relationships with existing broker partners to maximise new business flow
- Identifying and developing opportunities for new agency appointments, supporting the wider regional growth strategy
- Underwriting within delegated authority across the SME and mid-market commercial P&C segment
- Working closely with service underwriters and the wider regional team, who manage the ongoing servicing of the existing book
- Representing the business professionally and consistently across the Scottish broker market

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
