Role Description
This is a part-time remote DevOps Engineer role. The DevOps Engineer will design, implement, and maintain cloud infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code practices to ensure systems are secure, resilient, and scalable. Tasks include building and optimising CI pipelines, managing deployments, monitoring system performance, and troubleshooting issues across development and production environments. The role involves close collaboration with software engineers to streamline release processes, improve automation, and enhance observability. The DevOps Engineer will also contribute to documentation, best practices, and continuous improvement of the overall development and operations workflow.

What you'll do
- Be first responder for incidents, in and out of hours: diagnose, restore service, keep stakeholders informed, and write a short post-incident report
- Run monitoring and alerting across services, certificates, server health, and backups
- Keep operating systems, runtimes, databases, and supporting services patched and up to date
- Own backups and disaster recovery, including regular restore tests so that any server can be rebuilt within a day
- Manage security: SSH and firewall hardening, access control across systems, and secret rotation
- Own production deployments and move them into CI/CD pipelines
- Watch capacity and resize or split workloads as needed
- Lead the consolidation of infrastructure across cloud and hosting providers
- Look after DNS, domains, and TLS certificates
- Manage the third-party services our platforms depend on (email delivery, storage, code hosting, and similar)
- Review hosting costs monthly and flag anything that grows
- Keep infrastructure documentation current, including the reasoning behind non-obvious decisions

What we're looking for
- Solid Linux server administration experience in production
- Hands-on experience with web servers, relational databases, and identity/SSO services
- Experience with at least one major cloud provider and with dedicated or VPS hosting
- Comfortable with CI/CD, scripting, and infrastructure automation
- A track record of handling incidents calmly and writing things down
- Willingness to take part in out-of-hours on-call
How we work
You'll have clear ownership of operations. Application code and architecture stay with the architect and developers: you raise application issues, they fix them, and you're consulted on changes that affect the infrastructure.
