Lead DevOps Engineer

Location: Manchester or Leeds (Hybrid)
Salary: £80,000 - £90,000
Active SC clearance Required

Overview

We're looking for a Lead DevOps Engineer to play a key role in shaping and evolving cloud infrastructure, automation and platform engineering capabilities across complex, enterprise-scale environments. This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll combine deep technical expertise with mentoring, stakeholder engagement and technical ownership. You'll work closely with engineering teams, architects and delivery leaders to build scalable, secure and resilient cloud platforms whilst driving DevOps best practices across the organisation.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Leading the design, implementation and continuous improvement of cloud infrastructure and platform services.
  • Owning and enhancing CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation and release processes.
  • Driving Infrastructure as Code adoption using Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Building, maintaining and optimising AWS environments whilst supporting broader cloud initiatives.
  • Championing automation, observability, reliability and security best practices.
  • Supporting production systems and leading the resolution of complex technical issues.
  • Collaborating with engineers, architects and stakeholders to deliver scalable technical solutions.
  • Mentoring and coaching engineers, helping to build technical capability across the wider team.
  • Evaluating and implementing new technologies, tooling and AI-assisted engineering practices.
  • Promoting a strong DevOps culture and continuous improvement mindset throughout the engineering function.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience operating as a Senior or Lead DevOps Engineer.
  • Strong commercial experience with AWS cloud services.
  • Expertise building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using modern delivery tooling.
  • Strong Infrastructure as Code experience using Terraform and/or CloudFormation.
  • Experience automating operational processes using Python, Bash or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience with Git, Jenkins and modern software delivery practices.
  • Strong understanding of production system support, monitoring and observability.
  • Experience working with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Previous experience mentoring engineers or leading technical initiatives.
  • Active SC clearance

Desirable

  • Experience with Ansible or other configuration management tools.
  • Azure and/or GCP experience.
  • Experience working within regulated or security-sensitive environments.
  • AWS, Azure or GCP certifications.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude.
