I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience across multiple domains within cloud and infrastructure engineering. You should have a deep understanding of AWS services, with broad knowledge spanning the entire ecosystem rather than siloed expertise. Strong fundamentals in Linux are essential, complemented by solid networking skills and an understanding of distributed architectures. Proven experience in owning and operating production environments end-to-end is critical. Additionally, familiarity with containerized workloads using Docker, ECS, or Kubernetes, along with proficiency in infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform, is highly desirable. Strong scripting skills in Bash, Python, Go, or similar languages are also required. Candidates with experience in supporting incident response, monitoring, logging, and observability will be preferred.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement robust, scalable, and secure cloud infrastructure on AWS to support production workloads.
- Lead the migration of legacy systems into modern, cloud-native architectures, ensuring minimal disruption and maximum efficiency.
- Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or comparable tools to automate deployment processes.
- Enhance system reliability, observability, and cost-efficiency through continuous improvements and optimizations.
- Modernize CI/CD pipelines to enable rapid, safe deployment across multiple environments, fostering DevOps best practices.
- Support incident response activities, improve operational visibility through monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions.
- Mentor junior engineers, promote best practices, and contribute to engineering standards and design reviews.
