About The Role
The DevOps Engineer role at HMRC offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a transformative digital landscape. You will join an agile team dedicated to delivering innovative software solutions for Cloud Services and Dynamics, aligning with industry standards and best practices. Your responsibilities will include collaborating closely with senior developers and stakeholders to build, configure, and support scalable solutions that meet evolving business needs. You will play a vital role in supporting development processes by managing tools, testing environments, code control, and automating systems to ensure seamless deployment and operation of services. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of new service offerings by supporting infrastructure deployment and management across various programs, working in tandem with technical teams to deliver solutions efficiently and reliably. This role offers the chance to work on high-impact projects that directly influence HMRC’s digital services and customer experience.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise and practical experience in key DevOps disciplines. Essential qualifications include proficient Linux/Unix system administration skills and hands-on experience with at least one cloud platform such as AWS or Azure. Candidates should have a solid understanding of CI/CD pipeline development using tools like GitHub, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation, containerization technologies like Docker, and orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes is required. Basic scripting skills in Python, Bash, or PowerShell are also essential. Experience with monitoring and logging tools, including Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, or ELK, is highly desirable. Knowledge of DevOps tools like Jira, Confluence, and Artifactory will be advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and share technical knowledge within the team.

Responsibilities
- Manage and prioritize workload efficiently, ensuring timely delivery of tasks and projects.
- Develop, maintain, and share technical knowledge within the team to foster continuous learning and improvement.
- Collaborate with colleagues across various teams, including Operations, Database, Test, and Business Units, to deliver integrated solutions within agreed timelines.
- Support live systems by establishing and maintaining development environments, troubleshooting incidents, and resolving issues promptly.
- Escalate risks and issues to senior leadership when necessary, providing clear assessments and potential mitigation strategies.
- Conduct impact analysis and provide accurate estimates for system enhancements or changes, participating in peer reviews and consulting senior developers for guidance.
- Build, test, document, and implement solutions adhering to the Delivery Framework and quality standards.
- Assist testing teams during testing cycles, preparing documentation to support changes in the live environment.
- Manage the release of code changes into production environments following organizational procedures and best practices.
- Participate in regular on-call and out-of-hours support to ensure 24/7 service availability, including support during infrastructure upgrades and enhancements.
