About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer to join Leonardo’s dynamic team working on some of the most advanced defence and aerospace projects in the UK. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the enhancement of fast jet capabilities, including platforms such as the Eurofighter Typhoon, Saab Gripen, and the upcoming sixth-generation fighter jet platform, Tempest. As part of a collaborative agile environment, you will work alongside a team of 7-10 engineers, contributing to the development, integration, and testing of complex software solutions that underpin the nation’s air defence capabilities for decades to come.

You will be instrumental in designing robust software architectures, implementing new functionalities, and ensuring high standards of quality and safety. The role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to translate requirements into operational software, troubleshoot issues, and continuously improve system performance. Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise, collaborative mindset, and a proactive attitude. Essential qualifications include:

  • Proven experience working within an agile development environment, with a solid understanding of the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong proficiency in C++, ideally in regulated or safety-critical environments.
  • Experience with source control tools such as Git or equivalent.
  • Ability to develop software solutions from detailed requirements, demonstrating problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Competence in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving software issues using debugging tools.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.

Preferred Qualifications That Will Help You Stand Out Include

  • Familiarity with signal processing techniques.
  • Experience working on complex products and large codebases.
  • Knowledge of component-based development and embedded systems.
  • Experience with static analysis and code coverage tools.
  • Understanding of best practices for incremental and agile development.
  • Familiarity with Atlassian toolset and CMake.

While not all skills are mandatory, a positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and adaptability are highly valued traits.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks aimed at delivering high-quality software solutions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and translate them into effective software designs.
  • Architecting, developing, and testing software components in accordance with project specifications and safety standards.
  • Participating in planning sessions, providing technical input, and taking ownership of assigned tasks to meet project deadlines.
  • Implementing best practices for code quality, including static analysis, code reviews, and documentation.
  • Diagnosing and resolving software issues, performing root cause analysis, and ensuring system stability and reliability.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives, including process enhancements and adoption of new tools or methodologies.
  • Engaging in regular team communication and knowledge sharing to foster a collaborative working environment.
