Digital Design Team Lead - Southampton
An innovative semiconductor company is expanding its hardware design organisation and is looking for a Digital Design Team Lead to take a senior role across complex digital IP development.
This is a hands-on leadership position, combining technical ownership with people management. You will lead a team of experienced design engineers while remaining closely involved in RTL development, design optimisation, and the delivery of complex hardware projects.
The Principal Design Team Leader will have the opportunity to influence technical direction, engineering processes, and future product development, working closely with colleagues across architecture, algorithms, software, and verification.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of digital design engineers
- Provide technical leadership across complex ASIC and FPGA development projects
- Remain hands-on with RTL design and contribute to architectural and implementation decisions
- Take ownership of project delivery, ensuring designs meet performance, quality, and schedule requirements
- Drive optimisation across areas such as timing, power, area, and throughput
- Work closely with architecture, verification, software, and other engineering disciplines
- Help shape design methodologies, development processes, and engineering best practices
- Translate higher-level product requirements into clear technical objectives for the hardware team
- Support technical discussions with customers and senior stakeholders when required
- Identify opportunities to improve development efficiency through new tools, methodologies, and emerging technologies

Required Experience:
- Strong commercial experience in RTL design using Verilog and/or SystemVerilog
- Previous line management or people management experience within an engineering environment
- Experience leading technical projects and coordinating engineers towards successful delivery
- Experience working with industry-standard simulation and synthesis tools
- The ability to balance hands-on technical work with leadership and team development
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with both engineers and senior stakeholders
