Join Derby City Council’s Digital Development Team as a Digital Development Apprentice

Gain hands-on experience in digital transformation, AI, automation and technology projects while studying for a Level 3 IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship. Ideal for enthusiastic problem-solvers passionate about technology and learning.

You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • Supporting digital development, automation and AI initiatives across the council.
  • Assisting with the planning, coordination and administration of digital projects.
  • Providing first-line support for digital and AI services.
  • Carrying out quality assurance checks on Microsoft Forms and other digital solutions.
  • Creating guidance, training materials and user documentation.
  • Supporting testing activities and helping identify opportunities for service improvement.
  • Working with colleagues across the council to improve digital services and customer experiences.
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement and project communications.
  • Developing business process documentation and workflow diagrams.
  • Completing apprenticeship learning activities and applying your knowledge in the workplace.

What you'll learn

Course contents

  • Work at any stage of the solution lifecycle.
  • Interpret client requirements.
  • Prioritise tasks to work within agreed project plans.
  • Ensure resources are used efficiently and responsibly.
  • Design solutions to meet client and business requirements.
  • Identify technical solutions using creative and critical thinking.
  • Install hardware or software, either physically or virtually.
  • Search and use different types of data or information sources.
  • Test and evaluate performance, functionality, and usability of solutions to ensure compliance with customer and project requirements.
  • Deploy and implement solutions, supporting change management practices.
  • Create and maintain documentation in accordance with best practice and organisational requirements.
  • Support multiple contemporary or legacy solutions to required levels of service.
  • Apply organisational policies and legislation in relation to security requirements, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Communicate using a variety of tools and approaches, adapting language for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Apply continuous professional development CPD to support their own learning, business needs and technical developments.

Training schedule

This is an 80/20 apprenticeship, combining practical, on-the-job experience with dedicated learning time. You will spend approximately 80% of your time working alongside the Team, gaining hands-on experience across digital transformation, AI, automation and technology projects.

Off-the-job training will follow the time allocations outlined in the Occupational Standard. You will work towards the Level 3 IT Solutions Technician Apprenticeship, supported by Althaus and experienced colleagues at Derby City Council.

This approach allows you to apply what you learn directly in the workplace while developing valuable technical, professional and problem-solving skills.

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade 4/C)
    • Maths (grade 4/C)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
