Role: Digital Product Manager

Contract Length: 6 months from the start date

Location: Newport or Titchfield - 40% per week might need to travel to each site

IR35: In Scope


Job Description:

A product manager is responsible for the quality of their products. They will be expected to use knowledge of user needs and business goals to frame problems and set priorities for the delivery teams. Defines, owns and solves problems. At this level a product manager will manage a product through discovery, alpha, beta and live states, will support lead and senior product managers.


Typical Skills:

  • Identify and compare the best processes or delivery methods to use, including measuring and evaluating outcomes and help the team to decide the best approach.
  • Able to work to agreed minimum viable product (MVP), print and scope.
  • Demonstrate a working understanding of design, technology and data principles.
  • Knowledge of assisted digital support and can explain the importance of it.
  • Identify and challenge the validity of constraints whilst communicating about them and working within them.
  • Knowledge of the marketplace, realising the benefit and persuading others that a product is the right one to use.
  • Know how to integrate a product with other services and can ensure the products get used.
  • Recognise when to move from one stage of a product life cycle to another.
  • Manage delivery products and services at different phases.
  • Know how to design operational processes for the running and maintenance of products or services throughout their product life cycle.
  • Act as the escalation point for complex operational issues and can fix them.
  • Coordinate the team to investigate problems and implement solutions and preventative measures.
  • Apply tools, terms and concepts in a variety of ways and can be flexible and consider new ways of working.
  • Can collaborate with user researchers and can represent users internally, understanding the difference between user needs and the desires of the user.

About the Role:

The Statistical Business Register (SBR) is replacing a legacy system. It will hold data associated with the UK's businesses (The Register) which will be used in a variety of ways across different systems. The Register will be made up of a number of different digital products that will be used by clients business. Digital Services are currently restructuring and setting up of delivery teams to align with these products. These roles will sit within a product team as the Digital Product Manager. The candidates will:

  • Have expert product management skills, managing a product through discovery, alpha, beta and live states.
  • Potentially be involved in elements of programme/platform management activity, e.g., contribute to and/or maintain high-level road maps.
  • Work closely with the Lead SBR Product Manager to provide leadership and direction.
  • Define and own the vision and scope for their product and engage their teams and stakeholders in the development of that vision over time.
  • Be a key contact for Stakeholders - keeping people informed.
  • Work in the open and model transparency through things like show and tells.
  • Champion their users; reviewing research, feedback, data and insights to inform continuous improvement and decide priorities for user research and business analysis on their products.
  • Own the backlog and lead definition, priority, and refinement of stories to ensure they are of sufficient quality to easily pass through research design and development (with support from business analysts where appropriate).
  • Ensure that a successful and sustainable balance of investigation & research, new features and continuous improvement is prioritised for each iteration.
  • Sign off stories as “done” and be responsible for the quality of their product, ensuring the Government Service Standard is achieved for relevant product and quality-related points.
  • Work and develops positive relationships with the entire multidisciplinary team and take the views of the team into account when making product decisions. Working closely with:
    • Delivery Managers, to ensure plans are realistic, resources are in place and blockers are removed; plus
    • Tech Lead and Solutions Architect to ensure that the product vision is supported by appropriate technology choices, ensure technical tasks are appropriately prioritised and solutions are built in accordance with relevant standards and digital strategies.
