Service Designer (Inside IR35) for 12 Month Hybrid Contract
On behalf of the Department for Business and Trade we are looking for a Service Designer (Inside IR35) for a 12 Month hybrid contract based up to 2 days per week in any DBT UK Office.
An active SC Clearance is an essential requirement for this role, as a minimum you must be willing & eligible to undergo checks. (Please note, due to the exceptional requirements of this position (short-term nature of this role and speed at which we require a postholder in situ) preference may be given to candidates who meet all of the essential criteria and hold active security clearance.)
We have an immediate need for a Digital Service Designer to work on the Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, (BIST), Machinery of Government, (MoG), change and/or to support or supplement teams where existing specialists need to be diverted on to MoG work.
The BIST MoG is due to start its discovery phase in October 2026, with delivery in 2028. This is a time-critical activity to establish the evidence needed to support future decisions about service transitions, operating models, people impacts, technology migration and delivery planning.
Responsibilities
Service Prototyping
- Service prototyping involves bringing end-to-end service experiences to life so that you can test them with users.
- Approach service prototyping as a team activity, actively soliciting prototypes and testing with others
- Establish service design patterns and iterating them
- Contribute service design patterns and prototyping methodology to the wider design community, helping to build a community of practice with defined ways of working
- Help more junior designers to develop their service prototyping skills
- Advise teams and portfolios on the best methods of service prototyping to use
- Ensure best practice is being followed across the teams
- Coach and mentor to develop their service prototyping skills
- Run workshops with stakeholders at all levels
- You can work with policy teams and other stakeholders outside of DDaT on the implementation of service prototyping
- Direct the transition from prototype into pilot projects through working with the service areas who will take this forward and lead on-going evaluation, including creating clear success metrics for the improved service

Data Led Design
- Data led design involves designing services based on multiple sources of information.
- Use a range of quantitative data to inform your service design decision e.g. failure rates, conversions
- Work with researchers and business analysts to understand the key pain points and areas of failure within a service
- Use a range of data points to inform design decisions working with M&E functions to set the performance framework for services
- Design services that meet business needs in identifying where service deliver could be more efficient, cost effective or where intervention isn’t working
- Support colleagues across a portfolio in setting success metrics
- You can work with policy teams and other stakeholders outside of DDaT using a range of metrics and success criteria to co-design services
- Liaise with senior stakeholders to communicate service improvements that are data led and help create measurable improvements to a service
- You can influence the use of data and success metrics on service delivery beyond digital
- Support a range of colleagues on using a range of qualitative and quantitative data to support service transformation
Relationship management
- Relationship management involves managing stakeholder requirements and communications throughout a project, while remaining focused on the user needs and being a positive advocate for change.
- Understand who your stakeholders are, what evidence is relevant to them and the importance of managing relationships with them
- Influence decisions, deal with challenging situations and remove blockers
- Build long-term strategic relationships and communicate clearly and regularly with colleagues, supporting mutual needs and commitments while focusing on user needs
