Something to be proud of

Show season has well and truly kicked off and I have found my weekends spent doting on sheep and their lambs switching to photographing champion beasts and chatting to local livestock breeders.

One event which particularly impressed me was the Essex Young Farmers Show. This was huge and the amount of people flooding through the gate as I arrived left me quickening my step, eager to see what the day would involve.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Essex Young Farmers were able to keep agriculture at the forefront of the day, making it a social event for farmers, and an exciting, educational day out for the general public. Organised and run entirely by Essex Young Farmers clubs it is certainly something to be proud of.

Another show

Another show, which left me sacrificing a night at the Cirencester May Ball – but all for good reasons – was the Heathfield Show.

South East Farmer sponsored the best trade stand competition and with more than 200 trade stands at the show, exhibitors worked hard to be crowned top.
