Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Working within a friendly and supportive higher education environment, you'll play a key role in supporting staff and students with a wide range of technologies. From IT support and Microsoft cloud solutions to learning platforms, networking, and cutting-edge audiovisual systems, you'll gain hands-on experience across multiple areas of technology.
You'll work alongside experienced professionals who will help you develop valuable technical and problem-solving skills while giving you real responsibility from day one. As your knowledge grows, you'll have opportunities to support online learning systems, student information platforms, livestreaming technology, and digital transformation projects across the organisation.
This role offers a unique breadth of experience that you won't find in many apprenticeship programmes, providing a strong foundation for a long-term and rewarding career in IT, digital support, cloud technologies, or systems administration. Duties Include but are not limited to:
- Work towards your Digital Support Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification
- Learn about the internal help desk ticketing system and resolving user support issues
- Support the A/V systems in lecture rooms and the lecture theatre
- Support the use of the Mac-based Video Podcast Studio
- Develop and enhance skills in all Microsoft 365 Applications, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Teams and Sharepoint services
- Learn Cognito forms development to support business processes
- Learn Moodle LMS from an administrative perspective
- Production of meaningful documentation – contributing to organisational knowledge
- Learn to analyse systems and processes and devise, develop, test and implement the changes to improve process resilience
- Exposure to the use of AI tools to modify CSS and HTML code to speed up look and feel changes in online systems

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Use digital technologies, including collaborative tools, to operate effectively as part of a team, and with other stakeholders, enabling sharing of information and best practice.
- Use data accurately and securely to meet business requirements and in line with organisational procedures and legislation.
- Apply information security principles, for example: information transfer, deletion, storage, usage and communications that may include using mobile devices.
- Provide an appropriate and effective response to enquiries, providing support and information utilising digital channels and in line with organisation protocols.
- Operate digital information systems, for example:
- Management- Finance Human Resources
- Bespoke departmental or organisational systems or databases.
- Communicate effectively through a variety of different channels using terminology appropriate to the audience.
- Use digital resources to extend own knowledge and skills relevant to their role.
- Risk assess the organisational impact of decisions that they take.
- Use digital systems to identify productivity and performance improvements.
- Use digital technologies to operate effectively as part of a team, and with other stakeholders, enabling sharing of information and best practice.
- Maintain system security in line with organisational policies.
- Support digital operations or digital change and transformation activities.
- Investigate application problems and enable resolution to maintain productivity and improve quality of service.
- Coach and guide stakeholders to develop their applications skills to use digital systems effectively.
- Monitor data to analyse systems use and provide insights to recommend use or applications developments.
- Support customers in the use of information, products and services through digital channels.
- Diagnose technical problems by identifying and applying tools and techniques to undertake fault finding, recording and rectification.

Training schedule
The successful candidate will undertake a 18 Month, nationally recognised qualification through TDM. This is a work-based learning programme which will require commitment to block weeks in an online training room once every quarter working towards the qualification along with weekly off the job training and monthly coaching sessions.
You will be required to demonstrate through the standard that you meet all competencies and behaviours, which will lead to the achievement of the qualification. You will have a designated mentor in the workplace to support your learning and at the end of programme will be assessed via an external assessment body.

Other requirements
- Has achieved a minimum of 2 A-Levels (or equivalent).
Additional ad-hoc evening and weekend hours are available to support the A/V needs of the conferencing centre. These will be independent hours outside of the apprenticeship structure, but linked to the skills being developed.
