Digital Systems Engineer Apprentice

This is an exciting apprenticeship opportunity for a technically curious individual to join Vertex's Technical Services & Innovation team.

You will work closely alongside the Technical Services & Innovation Director, learning and contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of the digital systems that power Vertex's operations.

This role is not just about writing code — it is about understanding how systems connect, how businesses use technology, and how smart automation can transform the way a company works. Over time, you will develop into a confident digital systems practitioner with hands-on experience across a broad technology stack.

Key Responsibilities

As a Digital Systems Engineer Apprentice, your day-to-day work will include:

• Shadowing and supporting the design, development, and maintenance of internal business systems
• Assisting with API integrations between platforms and third-party services
• Contributing to web based tools and internal applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and Python
• Supporting database work including querying, reporting, and data management (SQL)
• Assisting with UI/UX design for internal tools and dashboards
• Supporting cloud infrastructure tasks across AWS and Microsoft Azure
• Working with GitHub for version control, code reviews, and collaborative development
• Assisting with Google Workspace administration and integrations
• Exploring and implementing AI integrations to support business processes
• Documenting systems, processes, data flows, and dependencies
• Supporting process redesign and simplification initiatives across the business
• Taking increasing ownership of smaller components and tasks as skills develop
• Adding new users and managing users through system and communication channels

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Course contents

• Use digital systems to identify productivity and performance improvements.

• Maintain system security in line with organisational policies.
• Support digital operations or digital change and transformation activities.
• Investigate application problems and enable resolution to maintain productivity and improve quality of service.
• Coach and guide stakeholders to develop their applications skills to use digital systems effectively.
• Monitor data to analyse systems use and provide insights to recommend use or applications developments.
• Support customers in the use of information, products and services through digital channels.
• Diagnose technical problems by identifying and applying tools and techniques to undertake fault finding, recording and rectification.
• Maintain end-user systems physically or remotely. For example: software, hardware or operating systems.
• Provide and direct end-users to tools and resources to help them to resolve their digital problems.
