How you'll make a difference
Join Adult Social Care and play a key role in shaping and improving direct payments across South Gloucestershire. As Direct Payments Lead, you will drive improvements in practice, ensuring compliance with the council's legal duty to offer direct payments while supporting practitioners to promote them confidently and consistently.
By simplifying processes, embedding best practice and improving the experience for both staff and service users, you will help ensure direct payments are a practical, effective and positive option for people who draw on care and support and their carers. Through your work, you will contribute to promoting independence, choice and wellbeing, enabling people to have greater control over how their care and support needs are met.
What you will be doing
It will be your responsibility to provide specialist advice and expertise on direct payments, developing and maintaining clear guidance, policies and procedures that are accessible, up to date and legally compliant.
You will monitor national policy and legislative documents, translating changes into local practice to ensure consistent, effective and compliant approaches are embedded across Adult Social Care.
To build knowledge, confidence and capability among practitioners and operational teams, you will design and deliver training, workshops and development opportunities.
Drawing on your specialist knowledge, you will identify opportunities for innovation, developing solutions that improve processes, promote best practice and drive continuous service improvement.
Working collaboratively with colleagues, commissioners and external providers, you will provide advice, share learning and support a consistent approach to direct payments.
Using performance data and management information, you will monitor outcomes and financial benefits, evaluating impact, identifying opportunities for improvement and demonstrating value for money.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
