Compost London is based in the Passmore Edwards Building at 207 Plashet Grove in East London (E6 1BX), placing it at the heart of a diverse and vibrant local community. The organization operates as a hub for initiatives that support social, environmental, and community development across the city. Its location provides strong links to local partners, grassroots organizations, and civic stakeholders. Potential board members will join an organization that is firmly rooted in its locality while engaging with wider strategic work across London.
Role Description
The Director – Board of Directors role is a part-time, hybrid position based in London, with a mix of on-site meetings and work from home as appropriate. The Director will contribute to strategic planning, governance, and oversight of Compost London’s activities, including reviewing performance, financial sustainability, and risk management.

Responsibilities

- Preparing for and attending board and committee meetings
- Providing constructive challenge and support to the executive team
- Helping to shape policies that align with the organization’s mission and values
- Engaging with stakeholders
- Representing Compost London at key events when needed
- Ensuring that decisions reflect good practice in equity, inclusion, and transparency
- Collaborating with other board members to maintain effective governance and support long-term organizational resilience
Qualifications
- Strategic leadership and governance skills, including experience with boards, non-profit or social sector organizations, and long-term planning.
- Financial literacy and risk management capabilities, such as understanding budgets, financial reports, and compliance obligations.
- Stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including the ability to build relationships with community partners, funders, and staff.
- Knowledge of community development, social impact, or environmental initiatives, with the ability to apply this knowledge to board-level decision-making.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and to transparent, ethical governance practices.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid environment, balancing in-person meetings in London with remote preparation and follow-up.
- Previous experience as a director, trustee, senior manager, or advisor is highly beneficial; relevant professional qualifications or training in governance, finance, or leadership are an advantage.
