Position Overview
The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), a Carnegie R1-designated, top-tier public research university, seeks a dynamic and innovative leader to serve as Director of the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR). Established in 1974, CAR is a state-accredited collections repository, active contract archaeology facility, and research unit closely affiliated with the Department of Anthropology. The Center manages over 15 million curated items, secures over $1 million in annual contracts, and provides training and research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
The Director will provide visionary leadership, oversee operations, develop community collaborations, support public education, and contribute to student training and mentoring, with the potential to teach courses or serve on graduate committees.

Core Responsibilities
- Lead CAR as a 21st-century university-based contract archaeology facility.
- Partner with the Department of Anthropology to provide hands-on training and research opportunities for students, including those in the PhD program.
- Contribute to instruction, teaching, and graduate committee service as desired.
- Promote community engagement and public education initiatives.
- Manage contracts, budgets, staff, and operational activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Anthropology or a related field.
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in resource management, heritage administration, or contract archaeology.
- Experience in all phases of CRM: bidding, project design and implementation, personnel and budget management, and report writing.
- Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in Anthropology or related field.
- Proven vision for leading a modern university-based archaeological facility.
- Strong executive leadership and interpersonal skills.
- Record of scholarship and research, preferably in Texas or adjacent regions.
Additional Information
- This is a security-sensitive, tobacco-free position requiring a successful background check.
- Must provide proof of U.S. work eligibility and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Occasional travel, after-hours, and weekend work may be required.
