Clinical Operations Director – UK Clinical Research Site Network

Location: UK
Employment Type: Full-time
Sector: Clinical Research / Site Network
Reporting to: Executive Leadership Team

The Opportunity

A rapidly growing UK clinical research site network is seeking an experienced Clinical Operations Director to provide strategic and operational leadership across its expanding portfolio of research sites. This is a senior leadership position for an individual who has successfully managed clinical research operations across multiple sites, rather than solely within a single research centre.

The successful candidate will be responsible for driving consistency, performance, quality and operational excellence across the network, while supporting the continued growth and development of its UK footprint.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall clinical operations leadership across multiple UK research sites.
  • Develop and implement operational strategies to improve performance, productivity and study delivery across the network.
  • Lead and develop Site Directors, Heads of Operations and senior clinical research teams across multiple locations.
  • Establish consistent SOPs, processes, KPIs and operational standards across the network.
  • Monitor site-level performance, including recruitment, retention, study start-up, timelines, quality and financial performance.
  • Identify underperforming sites and implement targeted improvement plans.
  • Ensure effective resource planning and allocation across the network.
  • Work closely with Principal Investigators, Sub-Investigators, Clinical Research Coordinators and wider site teams.
  • Provide operational oversight of clinical trials from feasibility and study start-up through to close-out.
  • Ensure sites maintain high standards of ICH-GCP, regulatory and quality compliance.
  • Partner with Quality, Regulatory, Finance and Commercial functions to ensure operational alignment.
  • Support the development and integration of new sites into the network.
  • Lead operational integration following site acquisitions, partnerships or network expansion.
  • Develop scalable systems and infrastructure capable of supporting continued network growth.
  • Use operational data and KPIs to drive evidence-based decision making.
  • Represent Clinical Operations at senior leadership and executive meetings.
  • Support relationships with pharmaceutical, biotechnology and CRO sponsors.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions around therapeutic expansion, site capacity and geographic growth.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
