Director, Commodities Trading

Commodity Derivatives Trader - Base & Precious Metals

Purpose

This opportunity offers a senior role in the continued success and growth of the Commodity Derivatives team, with a focus on Base and Precious Metals in the UK.

The role entails:

  • Managing the Base and Precious Metals trading book in close partnership with the wider Trading team.
  • Exercising strong market judgement and disciplined risk management, combined with collaborative execution.
  • Ensuring sustainable revenue delivery, development of the trading franchise, and building trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Success criteria include:

  • Achieving clear and consistent goals.
  • Strong, partnership-focused execution.
  • Thoughtful initiatives aligned with team business strategies and objectives.
  • Compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures.

This is a Material Risk Taker (MRT) position within the PRA/FCA Certification Regime. Successful candidates will undergo internal certification as performing a significant harm function.


Accountabilities

Strategic Leadership & Relationship Management

  • Champion a client-focused culture, prioritising relationship-building and trust.
  • Deepen engagement with the broader bank’s relationships, systems, and expertise.
  • Leverage internal networks to expand a global commodities client base.

Trading & Risk Management

  • Provide senior oversight of the metals trading book, managing risk with sound judgment and accountability.
  • Regularly engage with clients and stakeholders to share market insights, opportunities, and execute transactions effectively.

Client & Market Growth

  • Partner with Corporate and Investment Banking Relationship Managers to:
    • Expand the client base.
    • Cross-sell Global Banking and Markets (GBM) and broader bank capabilities.
    • Support stakeholder engagement through presentations and facilitating approval of hedging facilities.

Market & Regulatory Awareness

  • Monitor industry developments, including:
    • Market conditions.
    • Competitor practices.
    • Regulatory changes.
  • Ensure the business remains responsive and aligned with evolving requirements.

Risk & Compliance

  • Thoughtfully apply the bank’s risk appetite and risk culture to daily activities.
  • Maintain regulatory compliance while adhering to:
    • Operational Risk Management Framework.
    • Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework.
    • AML/ATF Global Handbook.
    • Code of Conduct.

Operational & Cultural Contributions

  • Drive efficiency and effectiveness within the respective area.
  • Uphold day-to-day business controls to meet obligations related to:
    • Operational risk.
    • Regulatory compliance risk.
    • AML/ATF risk.
    • Conduct risk.
  • Foster a high-performing, respectful, and inclusive team culture.
  • Support the team’s vision, values, and business strategy.

Education & Experience Requirements

Qualifications & Expertise

  • Undergraduate degree required, preferably in:
    • Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
    • Finance, Economics, or Business.
  • CFA designation or an advanced degree considered an advantage.
  • Demonstrated confidence in applying expertise in a fast-paced trading environment.
  • Strong product knowledge of financial markets.
  • Proficiency with Bloomberg, booking systems, and trading protocols.
