About ELR
E-Invoicing and Live Reporting (ELR) is Avalara's product line for government-mandated electronic invoicing and real-time tax reporting. As more countries pass legislation requiring digital invoice exchange and live reporting to tax authorities, companies operating in those jurisdictions must comply. Avalara ELR gives businesses a single API and platform to meet these requirements across countries, replacing the fragmented, country-by-country local solutions most companies would otherwise need to stitch together.
Overview
Avalara is seeking a Director of Finance & Strategy to serve as the embedded finance partner — effectively a mini-CFO — to the ELR General Manager. This role will spend approximately 75% of its time driving the ELR P&L, growth strategy, and operating rhythm alongside the ELR GM, and approximately 25% of its time providing FP&A partnership to Avalara's non-ELR Sales leaders across EMEA. The role reports solid-line to the SVP, Finance & Strategy and dotted-line to the ELR GM, ensuring both close day-to-day partnership with the business and full integration into Avalara's broader finance organization, standards, and reporting cadence.
This is a high-visibility, high-ownership role for a finance leader who wants true operating partnership with a strategically important, fast-growing product line, while also building broader cross-functional exposure through EMEA GTM finance support. The ideal candidate combines strong financial modeling and analytical rigor with the business judgment and communication skills to operate as a genuine co-pilot to the business, not just a reporting function.
What Your Responsibilities Will Be
ELR Finance Partnership (~75%)
- Serve as the primary finance partner to the ELR General Manager, functioning as a mini-CFO for the product line — embedded in strategy, operating reviews, and day-to-day decision-making.
- Own ELR's financial plan, forecast, and long-range model, connecting bookings, ARR growth, pricing, and cost structure to overall product line performance.
- Partner with the ELR GM on pricing and monetization strategy, new market/geography expansion, and investment prioritization (e.g., product, GTM, partnerships).
- Build and maintain the KPI framework for ELR (e.g., pipeline conversion, ARR growth, net revenue retention, unit economics) and translate performance into clear, value-lever-based narratives for executive and Vista/Board-level audiences.
- Lead monthly and quarterly business reviews for ELR, providing the GM with data-driven recommendations on where to lean in, course-correct, or reallocate investment.
- Support M&A, competitive, and market-sizing analysis relevant to ELR's global expansion (e.g., new country mandates, regulatory-driven demand).
- Represent ELR in Avalara's broader FP&A, AOP, and Vista reporting processes, ensuring the product line's story is well-integrated into company-wide financial narratives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

EMEA Sales Finance Support (~25%)
- Provide FP&A partnership to Avalara's non-ELR Sales leaders across EMEA, supporting pipeline, bookings, and quota/territory planning.
- Deliver recurring pipeline and bookings analysis (e.g., stage conversion, coverage ratios, forecast accuracy) to help EMEA Sales leadership manage in-quarter performance.
- Support EMEA-specific AOP and forecast cycles, ensuring alignment with global FP&A calendars, templates, and value-lever frameworks.
- Partner with EMEA Sales leadership on go-to-market efficiency questions (e.g., capacity planning, segment/channel performance) and flag risks or opportunities early.
- Ensure consistency between EMEA GTM reporting and enterprise-level bookings, ARR, and pipeline reporting standards.
What You'll Need to be Successful
- 10-15+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate strategy, or product-line finance; SaaS or high-growth technology experience strongly preferred.
- Prior experience as a direct finance partner to a GM, product/business leader, or country/regional leader — comfortable operating as a trusted advisor, not just a reporting analyst.
- Strong financial modeling skills (driver-based forecasting, unit economics, pricing/monetization analysis) and comfort building models from scratch.
- Demonstrated ability to apply AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, or similar) to accelerate modeling, reporting, and analytics using AI as an augmentation layer that speeds up execution and sharpens insight, not a replacement for financial judgment.
- Experience supporting or partnering with Sales/GTM organizations; familiarity with pipeline, bookings, and quota-carrying rep metrics.
- International or EMEA business experience a plus, given the cross-regional scope of this role.
- Strong technical proficiency in financial planning systems (e.g., Pigment, Adaptive, Anaplan) and analytics platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Power BI, Tableau, Omni); SQL a plus.
- Exceptional executive communication and storytelling skills — able to translate complex data into clear, value-lever-based narratives for GM, CFO, and Board-level audiences.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field; MBA or CFA preferred.
