The Role

The Director, Global Mobility leads and develops a team of professionals to deliver high-quality global mobility tax compliance and practical advisory services for assigned clients. The Director brings strong technical expertise in individual income tax, social security, payroll withholding, tax equalization and protection, and the tax implications of cross-border assignments, business travel, and remote work.

The Director establishes and maintains trusted client relationships, working with Ryan Principals and other team members to identify client service opportunities and support the client sales cycle as needed. The Director may lead sales efforts in certain cases.

A key focus of the role is translating complex tax rules into practical, commercially focused advice, ensuring consistent client delivery, and building scalable processes, controls, tools, and ways of working that improve quality, efficiency, and risk management across the Global Mobility practice.

Duties and Responsibilities

People

  • Builds, develops, and leads a high-performing Global Mobility team, creating a strong practice knowledge base and actively coaching and mentoring professionals within the Firm.
  • Manages practice group needs, including resourcing, assignments, training, technology, tools, and other capabilities required to support effective client delivery.
  • Works closely with other Ryan team members and service lines to coordinate delivery, share expertise, and avoid duplication of effort across client projects.

Client

  • Develops client work plans, delivery models, responsibilities, and schedules for associated Global Mobility project deliverables.
  • Performs services at client location(s) where required and works effectively with globally distributed client and Ryan teams.
  • Reviews client data, assignment and travel populations, compensation and payroll information, and tax calculations to identify technical issues, risks, and advisory opportunities.
  • Researches and resolves complex global mobility tax matters, including individual income tax, social security, payroll withholding, tax equalization and protection, business travel, remote work, and cross-border assignment issues.
  • Prepares and conducts client presentations, translating complex technical matters into clear, practical recommendations and actions.
  • When required, serves as principal contact for client activity and takes ownership of overall service quality, responsiveness, and delivery.
  • Leads the resolution of complex client matters and coordinates with tax authorities, external providers, and other stakeholders where required.
  • Assists clients with global mobility program cost management, tax accruals, budgets, forecasts, and the practical tax implications of policy and program decisions.
  • Assists with client billing and collections, engagement financial management, forecasting, and effective deployment of team resources.
  • Develops new clients, maintains existing client relationships, identifies opportunities to broaden the scope of services, and supports sustainable growth of the Global Mobility practice.
  • Communicates technical developments, legislative changes, emerging mobility trends, training opportunities, client needs, and practical strategies to clients and internal teams.

Value

  • Ensures team compliance with Firm policies, practice guidelines, quality standards, and agreed client delivery processes.
  • Manages and monitors all aspects of Global Mobility projects, with clear ownership of scope, quality, timelines, budgets, risks, and client outcomes.
  • Provides strong technical review and oversight of global mobility tax compliance and advisory work, including individual income tax returns, tax calculations, hypothetical tax, tax equalization/protection calculations, social security, payroll withholding, and related supporting documentation where required.
  • Manages personnel, including assignments, capacity, development, performance, recruitment needs, and succession planning, to build a scalable and engaged team.
  • Establishes and maintains effective global mobility compliance calendars, trackers, controls, and governance processes across relevant jurisdictions and client populations.
  • Builds, documents, and continuously improves repeatable processes, review standards, templates, tools, and controls that support efficient, accurate, and consistent delivery.
  • Leads practical advisory projects, converting technical analysis into implementable recommendations for client mobility programs, policies, payroll processes, controls, and operating models.
  • Maintains deep technical knowledge of global mobility taxation and pursues and maintains relevant professional designations (for example, CPA, EA, CTA, ATT, or other appropriate tax/accounting qualification).
  • Participates actively in professional organizations, technical forums, and internal learning to maintain market-leading Global Mobility tax knowledge.
  • Actively promotes the practice internally and externally, supports recruitment, and builds a strong pipeline of viable Global Mobility candidates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance/Economics, Taxation, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Significant relevant experience in global mobility tax, expatriate tax, or cross-border individual taxation is required, including demonstrated experience leading teams and managing complex client engagements.
  • The position requires strong tax technical capability, practical problem-solving, client management, communication, and leadership skills.

Computer Skills

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft® Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet navigation and research.
  • Experience with global mobility, tax compliance, workflow, data, or project management technology is preferred.

Certificates And Licenses

  • Relevant professional tax or accounting designation (for example, CPA, EA, CTA, ATT, or other appropriate designation) preferred, or demonstrated commitment to obtaining an appropriate designation.
  • Valid driver’s license required where applicable to the role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises employees in the Global Mobility practice and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Firm’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include building and developing the team, allocating work, coaching and performance management, supporting recruitment, and creating effective structures and processes for consistent client delivery.
