DIRECTOR OF ADULT SERVICES
Salary: £108k
This is a significant opportunity to join a progressive, ambitious and high-performing Council with a clear commitment to delivering excellent outcomes for its communities. Rhondda Cynon Taf serves around 240,000 people across the Rhondda, Cynon and Taf Ely valleys. Our strength lies in a culture that values innovation, collaboration and ambition, creating the conditions for bold ideas and meaningful change to succeed.
With the current Director of Adult Services due to retire at the end of March 2027, we are seeking an exceptional successor to lead the next chapter of adult social care in Rhondda Cynon Taf. This is a pivotal strategic leadership role, with responsibility for ensuring that services continue to protect, support and empower residents, enabling people and communities to live safely, independently and well.
We are proud of what we have achieved, but our ambition is greater still. Rising demand, increasing complexity and sustained financial pressures mean adult social care must continue to transform. The successful candidate will help drive that transformation, bringing clarity, confidence and strategic grip to one of the Council’s most important leadership portfolios.
You will be a credible and resilient senior leader, able to operate with authority and judgement in a large and complex organisation. With responsibility for a budget of around £139 million and approximately 933 staff, you will lead the full breadth of adult social care services. You will bring a strong background in health or social care, substantial strategic management experience, and a proven record of delivering transformation, improvement and effective partnership working at scale.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
