Role Description

The Director of Communications is a volunteer, on-site role based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. This role oversees the development and execution of JOYBRINGERS’ communication strategies to increase visibility, engagement, and support for the organization’s mission.

Day-to-day tasks include:

  • Drafting and reviewing press releases
  • Managing media outreach
  • Coordinating public relations activities
  • Creating and refining messaging across digital and print channels
  • Supporting internal communications
  • Collaborating with program and leadership teams to ensure consistent, mission-aligned narratives
  • Monitoring communication outcomes
  • Nurturing relationships with stakeholders and partners
  • Identifying opportunities to amplify the voices and stories of children and young people served by JOYBRINGERS

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and strategic communications skills to develop clear, consistent messaging and organizational narratives
  • Experience with press releases and media relations to engage journalists, secure coverage, and manage external communications
  • Background in public relations to build and maintain positive relationships with stakeholders, partners, and the wider community
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver communication campaigns across multiple channels, including digital and social media
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with attention to detail and audience-focused content creation
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, uphold inclusive communication practices, and represent the organization professionally
  • Prior experience in nonprofit, youth development, education, or community-based organizations is beneficial
  • Relevant education or training in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field is an advantage
