Director of Corporate & Finance

Enterprise Oxfordshire | Oxfordshire | Up to £95,000

Four-day week | Predominantly remote | 12% pension

Enterprise Oxfordshire exists to help Oxfordshire grow — backing businesses, attracting investment and driving economic development across the county.

It’s a small team of around thirty people, but it manages significant public and grant funding, so financial sustainability, governance and value for money really matter.

They’re looking for someone to lead Finance and Corporate Services through an important few years for the organisation, working closely with a new Managing Director as the business evolves around its funding, structure and longer-term growth.

You’ll be the senior finance voice in the room — advising the MD and Board, shaping financial strategy and making sure decisions around growth and investment are backed by good financial insight.

There’s a significant governance piece too. You’ll oversee risk, controls and compliance, make sure public funds are managed properly and stand up to audit scrutiny, and help ensure the organisation can demonstrate value for money.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The remit goes beyond finance, covering procurement, contracts, corporate services and a fair amount of Company Secretarial work.

And because the team is lean, this isn’t a role where everything gets delegated down. You’ll need to be comfortable operating at Board level one minute and getting into the detail yourself when something needs sorting.

You’ll need a professional accountancy qualification — ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent — and experience in an environment where funding comes with real accountability attached.

That could be local or central government, a LEP or Growth Hub, a university, housing, a charity, or another publicly funded or regulated organisation.

Just as importantly, they want someone with commercial instinct. Someone who can balance good governance and stewardship of public money with growth, financial sustainability and making things happen.

The practicalities: it’s a genuine four-day week, paid for 37.5 hours while working 30, with most people taking either a Monday or Friday off. It’s predominantly home-based, with the team together in Oxford roughly once a week, usually a Wednesday, so you’ll need to live within a realistic commuting distance of Oxford.

You’ll also get 23 days’ holiday on top of the four-day pattern, a 12% employer pension against a 4% minimum employee contribution, healthcare and flexitime.

It’s a fixed-term contract through to 2028, linked to the current funding cycle, with the potential to become permanent as the longer-term structure becomes clearer.

If you like the idea of Board-level influence, genuinely broad responsibility and a role where you can help shape both the financial sustainability and future direction of the organisation, send over your CV and let’s talk.

This search is being managed by Distinct Recruitment on a retained basis.
