Director of Data Engineering | Hybrid in London | Up to £140k + Equity + Benefits
A growing technology business is seeking a Director of Data Engineering to lead the evolution of its data platform and engineering function as it enters the next phase of AI-driven product development.
This is a rare opportunity to shape the technical vision, architecture, and team strategy for a platform that sits at the heart of a knowledge-rich, data-intensive product. Working closely with executive leadership, you'll play a key role in defining how modern data engineering, AI, and search technologies are leveraged to create next-generation user experiences.
The Role
This position combines technical leadership with people management and strategic decision-making. You'll lead a team of data-focused engineers while remaining close to architecture, platform design, and technical direction.
The role would suit someone who enjoys operating at the intersection of engineering leadership and hands-on technical problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and execute the long-term vision for the organisation's data platform and data engineering function
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers and technical leaders
- Partner with senior stakeholders to make strategic decisions around platform architecture, tooling, and technology investments
- Drive the development of scalable data pipelines, processing systems, and data services
- Shape the adoption of AI-enabled capabilities across the platform
- Influence engineering standards, delivery practices, and team culture
- Support hiring and organisational growth as the engineering function continues to expand

What We're Looking For
- Experience leading engineering teams as an Engineering Manager, Head of Engineering, Director, or similar leadership role
- Strong background building and scaling cloud-based data platforms
- Expertise in modern data engineering practices, distributed systems, and large-scale data processing
- Hands-on experience with Python and data-centric applications
- Strong cloud experience, ideally within GCP environments
- Experience leading technical architecture and platform strategy
- Proven track record of hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers

Desirable Experience
- AI-powered products and platforms
- Search technologies, retrieval systems, or knowledge platforms
