Director of Data Research
Remote - UK Based
£100,000 - £150,000
This is an opportunity to lead a growing Data Research function within a scaling technology business. You will combine strategic leadership with hands-on statistical and data expertise, shaping how novel data sources are discovered, evaluated, and transformed into commercially valuable insights.
The Company
They are a data-led technology business providing sophisticated KPI and market insights to investment professionals. Their platform combines first-party and third-party datasets with proprietary modelling techniques. Following recent investment and continued growth, they are strengthening their senior technology leadership team.
The Role
As Director of Data Research, you will set the technical direction for the function while leading and developing a growing team.
- Define and execute the data research strategy alongside senior technology and strategy stakeholders.
- Lead complex, open-ended research projects from hypothesis through to evidence-based recommendations.
- Establish rigorous standards for evaluating new datasets, improving accuracy, quality, and speed.
- Develop approaches for assessing the commercial value of new data sources and supporting purchasing decisions.
- Drive greater statistical and technical sophistication across data research.
- Lead, hire, and develop technical talent as the function scales.
- Use Python, SQL, statistical analysis, and data modelling expertise to review and challenge technical work.
- Explore how AI can improve research quality, data evaluation, and operational efficiency.

Your Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial or research experience across data science, statistics, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
- Deep knowledge of statistical analysis, data modelling, feature engineering, and messy real-world datasets.
- Strong Python and SQL capability, with the technical depth to provide meaningful oversight of complex work.
- Experience defining hypotheses and leading ambiguous research projects through to clear conclusions.
- Demonstrable experience leading and developing technical teams.
- Strong commercial judgement when assessing the costs, benefits, and potential value of datasets.
- Ability to communicate complex technical findings and limitations clearly to senior and non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable making pragmatic decisions within a fast-moving, scaling environment.

Advantageous Experience:
- Experience with financial data, alternative data, investment research, first-party data collection, or AI-enabled research workflows.
