Coventry City Council: Director of Economic Growth
Coventry City Council is seeking an experienced and influential senior leader to provide strategic leadership for the next phase of Coventry's economic and place-based transformation. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive and serving as a member of the Corporate Leadership Team, the successful candidate will shape the city's economic future by driving inclusive growth, leading major regeneration and investment programmes, and maximising the value of the Council's commercial property portfolio to deliver both income and wider place-making benefits.
The ideal candidate will have a strong track record in economic growth, regeneration, infrastructure, property, and development, with experience of securing investment, managing significant budgets and assets, and building successful partnerships across public and private sectors. They will combine strategic vision, commercial acumen, and political awareness with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels, inspire high-performing teams, and deliver tangible outcomes for communities. A collaborative, values-driven approach and a commitment to equality, inclusion, and sustainable growth are essential, as is the ability to lead across economic growth, planning, transport, green futures, property, and development to drive long-term prosperity for Coventry.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
