The Opportunity
Delta Mobrey designs and manufactures safety-critical instrumentation used in demanding industrial environments around the world. We are seeking an exceptional Chief Engineer to become the technical authority for our global engineering organisation.
This is not primarily a management role. Neither is this a strategy-focused executive position. Instead, we are looking for an accomplished engineer who remains passionate about engineering and who can raise the technical capability of our engineering function, strengthen configuration management disciplines and help develop the next generation of engineers.
A significant proportion of customer orders require engineering adaptation, modification or redesign. The successful candidate will help ensure that these activities are delivered efficiently whilst maintaining robust engineering governance, configuration control and product integrity.
Delta Mobrey continues to expand within highly regulated sectors including Nuclear, Defence, Energy and Critical Infrastructure. The Chief Engineer will play a key role in ensuring our engineering capability, product governance and technical disciplines support this growth.
This role will suit an engineer who enjoys solving technical problems, mentoring engineers and ensuring that product information, engineering records and engineering decisions remain robust, traceable and controlled throughout the product lifecycle.
The Mission
To strengthen Delta Mobrey's technical capability, configuration management disciplines and engineering knowledge base whilst supporting the development of world-class engineering talent and maintaining the integrity of our products throughout their lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Engineering Excellence
- Act as the senior technical authority across the Engineering function.
- Provide technical leadership on complex engineering and design challenges.
- Support engineers through design reviews, investigations and problem-solving activities.
- Champion sound engineering judgement and technical rigour.
- Drive engineering best practice across product development, verification and validation activities.
- Support the development of technical capability across all engineering disciplines.
- Mentor and coach engineers at all levels.
- Promote a culture of engineering excellence, continuous learning and professional development.
Configuration Management & Engineering Information Leadership
A critical aspect of this role will be maintaining and improving the engineering disciplines that underpin product integrity, traceability and long-term business success:
- Act as the organisational authority for engineering configuration management.
- Strengthen engineering change control processes across the product lifecycle.
- Establish and maintain robust product configuration disciplines.
- Ensure traceability between customer requirements, designs, drawings, bills of materials, software, validation evidence and delivered products.
- Improve engineering governance and technical control without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
- Lead improvements to CAD, PDM, PLM and ERP integration.
- Develop strategies for managing and extracting value from legacy engineering information and technical data.
- Improve accessibility, governance and quality of engineering records.
- Ensure engineering data remains accurate, controlled, auditable and commercially valuable.
- Support digitalisation initiatives that improve engineering efficiency and knowledge retention.
- Strengthen product lifecycle management disciplines across the organisation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

What We're Looking For
You are first and foremost an engineer.
You have built your career designing, developing and supporting engineered products, preferably sensing instrumentation for safety critical purposes in highly regulated industry sectors and have retained the technical depth, curiosity and credibility that allows you to guide and influence experienced engineers.
You are equally comfortable discussing product architecture, engineering design and technical problem solving as you are configuration baselines, engineering change control, product lifecycle management and data governance. Most importantly, you understand that robust configuration management and engineering information control are fundamental to product quality, regulatory compliance and business performance.
Our Requirements
Essential:
- Significant experience designing and developing complex engineered products.
- Strong electro-mechanical engineering background.
- Extensive experience within regulated engineering environments.
- Proven expertise in configuration management and engineering change control.
- Strong understanding of product lifecycle management principles.
- Practical experience of CAD, PDM, PLM and ERP systems.
- Experience integrating engineering information across multiple systems and platforms.
- Requirements management, traceability and verification experience.
- Verification, validation and qualification of engineered products.
- Proven capability to mentor, coach and develop engineers.
- Strong understanding of engineering governance and quality systems.
- Degree or equivalent qualification / experience in Engineering.

Why Join Delta Mobrey?
This is a rare opportunity to shape the technical future of a well-established engineering business with a global customer base, an extensive product heritage and ambitious growth plans. You will work alongside experienced engineering managers and talented engineers whilst influencing the future direction of our engineering capability, configuration management disciplines and product development processes. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy through:
- Improved engineering excellence.
- Stronger configuration management and traceability.
- Better utilisation of engineering knowledge and data.
- Development of future technical talent.
- Enhanced support for growth in highly regulated markets.
The Ideal Candidate
The strongest candidates may currently hold positions such as:
- Chief Engineer
- Principal Engineer
- Engineering Authority
- Technical Director
- Head of Design Engineering
- Product Engineering Manager
- Systems Engineering Manager
- Engineering Excellence Manager
- Configuration Management Lead
- PLM Manager
Leadership experience is important. However, technical credibility, engineering judgement, configuration management expertise and the ability to develop engineers are the primary selection criteria for this role.
What This Role Is Not
This role is unlikely to suit candidates whose experience is predominantly:
- Programme or project management.
- Strategy and corporate leadership.
- General management without deep engineering involvement.
- Operational leadership without product development responsibility.
- People leadership without significant technical engineering expertise.
- Engineering environments where configuration management and product lifecycle control are not central disciplines.
We are looking for an engineer's engineer: someone with the technical depth to earn the respect of experienced engineers, the expertise to strengthen configuration management and engineering governance, and the passion to develop the capability of the engineering function for the future.
Applicants must have the right to work in the UK without sponsorship.
