The Company

Our client is a specialist engineering and manufacturing business designing and manufacturing safety critical sensing, switching and instrumentation products for customers across the nuclear, defence, energy, marine, oil & gas and process industries.

Their products operate in some of the world's most demanding environments, where reliability, safety, compliance and engineering integrity are critical.

Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Director of Engineering to lead and develop their international Engineering function across the UK, Bulgaria and Malaysia.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Engineering will provide strategic and operational leadership across the Engineering function.

This is a senior product engineering leadership role, focused on the development, qualification, improvement and lifecycle support of safety critical engineered products.

You will lead multidisciplinary engineering teams covering mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering, while strengthening engineering governance, product development processes and technical assurance across the organisation.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical credibility alongside proven experience leading engineering teams within a regulated product environment.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

  • Develop and implement the Engineering strategy in line with wider business objectives.
  • Lead multidisciplinary Engineering teams across the UK and international locations.
  • Develop engineering capability, succession plans and future engineering leaders.
  • Build a high performance culture focused on accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure Engineering delivers against agreed quality, cost and delivery objectives.
  • Align engineering resources with current business priorities and future growth.

Product Engineering & Development

  • Lead the engineering delivery of standard and bespoke customer solutions.
  • Translate customer requirements into robust engineering specifications and product designs.
  • Oversee product development throughout the full product lifecycle.
  • Drive improvements to engineering systems, processes and ways of working.
  • Support product roadmaps, technology development and continuous product improvement.

Engineering Governance

  • Strengthen requirements management across the engineering lifecycle.
  • Ensure full traceability from customer requirements through design, verification and acceptance.
  • Lead design reviews, risk reviews and engineering approval processes.
  • Maintain strong engineering change control and configuration management.
  • Ensure appropriate engineering evidence is available to demonstrate product integrity and compliance.

Compliance & Technical Assurance

  • Ensure products meet customer specifications and applicable industry standards.
  • Oversee qualification, verification, validation and certification activities.
  • Strengthen functional safety, regulatory compliance and technical assurance processes.
  • Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing and Supply Chain to ensure products are compliant, manufacturable and supportable.

Business & Customer Leadership

  • Support business growth through engineering excellence, innovation and product development.
  • Develop strong relationships with customers, suppliers and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Contribute as a senior member of the leadership team.
  • Ensure engineering capability supports the company's long term growth strategy.

About You

You will be an experienced Engineering Director, Head of Engineering or senior engineering leader with a strong technical foundation and experience developing engineered products within a regulated environment.

Essential Experience

  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong product engineering experience within a design and manufacturing environment.
  • Experience delivering requirements led product development.
  • Engineering governance and design assurance experience.
  • Experience with verification, validation and qualification.
  • Strong understanding of customer specifications and requirements traceability.
  • Experience operating within regulated or safety critical industries.
  • Engineering change management and configuration control.
  • Experience working closely with Manufacturing, Quality and Supply Chain.
  • Experience managing engineering teams across multiple sites or international locations.

Desirable Experience

  • Instrumentation, sensing or control products.
  • Functional safety and SIL related systems.
  • Nuclear, defence or aerospace environments.
  • Product certification and regulatory compliance.
  • Design Authority, Product Authority or Chief Engineer experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status.
