Director of Finance and Operations

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists (RCOphth) is a membership organisation and the voice of eye doctors in the UK and overseas. Their role is to champion the specialty, set standards of training and practice, and influence change to make a difference to the lives of patients with eye conditions. A registered charity, providing critical support in training and education standards for the ophthalmology profession, RCOphth is currently recruiting a permanent Director of Finance and Operations to join their Senior Leadership Team.

The Director of Finance and Operations plays an important role within RCOphth, providing strategic leadership, oversight and development of a portfolio of corporate support functions. This includes finance, membership, HR, IT and facilities. This role forms a key part of the College’s Senior Leadership Team, taking corporate responsibility for the overall direction and operational management of the charity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and quality assurance for the annual budgeting and forecasting process
  • Present financial reports and analysis to the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees to underpin informed discussion and decision-making
  • Provide executive oversight of the annual audit and statutory reporting process, including the production of the annual report, working closely with auditors and ensuring that any management control points are implemented promptly
  • Lead trustee engagement on investment strategy and monitor investment performance
  • Manage a team of 4 direct reports and wider team of finance and corporate services professionals
  • Oversee membership strategy to support sustained growth, identifying new opportunities to develop our offer to UK and international members
  • Lead on other key operational areas including IT and facilities management, and HR ensuring the smooth running of the organisation and play a full and active role as a member of the SLT, contributing to the development and delivery of the College's strategy and organisational priorities

What’s in it for you?

  • Salary of £85,000 per annum
  • Hybrid working of 2 days per week from the central London office and the remainder from home
  • Core working hours of 10am – 4pm

  • Be a qualified accountant (CCAB or equivalent)
  • Have experience in a senior leadership role at Head of, Deputy Director or Director level.
  • Understand charity accounting standards and the considerations involved in operating within a not-for-profit environment.
  • Have held responsibility for at least one non-finance function and be able to demonstrate your ability to lead non-finance teams from both an operational and strategic perspective.
  • Be comfortable advising and working closely with trustees, committees and senior stakeholders.
  • Bring a collaborative, pragmatic and values-led approach to organisational leadership.
