Director of Finance and Operations
London, hybrid working
Circa £90,000
We are recruiting for a highly capable Director of Finance and Operations to join an internationally respected charitable organisation.
This is a pivotal senior leadership opportunity for someone who can combine strategic thinking with a practical, hands on approach. Reporting to the CEO and sitting on the Senior Management Team, you will lead a multi-disciplinary function and ensure the organisation has the people, systems, financial controls and operational capability to deliver its ambitious mission.
The organisation is growing, with colleagues based in the UK and internationally. You will lead a team covering finance, fundraising, HR, governance, operations, office management and IT.
The role
You will:
- Lead and develop a high-performing finance and operations team, with five direct reports
- Oversee organisational budgets, forecasting, cash management, expenditure approvals and financial reporting
- Ensure strong financial controls, charity compliance, annual audit delivery and production of statutory accounts
- Provide clear financial and operational information to the CEO, Board and relevant committees
- Oversee the HR function, including policies, employee relations, recruitment and organisational development
- Support the continued development of an inclusive, compliant international workforce
- Maintain effective governance and manage external legal advice where required
- Oversee fundraising operations, donor reporting and financial compliance
- Ensure the smooth delivery of Board meetings, international travel, visits and events
- Oversee office operations, IT systems, knowledge management and appropriate use of AI
- Contribute fully to organisational strategy, continuous improvement and change programmes

About you
You will be an experienced senior leader with a background in charity, not-for-profit, international development, membership, foundation or another values-led environment. You will bring:
- Experience leading a multi-disciplinary finance, operations, corporate services or resources function
- Strong financial literacy, including budget-setting, forecasting, financial controls and Board-level reporting
- Knowledge of charity finance, governance and regulatory requirements
- Experience of working with auditors, annual accounts and ideally Charities SORP
- Strong HR knowledge, including policy development, employment law and people management
- The ability to lead across functions where you may not be the technical specialist
- A collaborative, pragmatic and improvement-focused leadership style
- Excellent communication skills and the confidence to work with senior stakeholders and trustees
- Experience of international recruitment, overseas staff or Employer of Record arrangements would be advantageous
- Experience overseeing fundraising finance, IT, office management or complex international travel would also be beneficial
